Church of Sciencetolgy

Here's a idea of a new POI project.
How about a Church of Sciencetolgy POI?

Why?

How about a POI file of psychiatrists?

After all, after hanging out with Cruise and Travolta you might need one!! LOL

We have files for many other

We have files for many other types of churches so I think that this is a great idea.

Scientologists know where their churches are. If you aren't a Scientologist, they don't want you to know.

I've found the locations

This morning I've been trying to read up on how to make a .csv file. Well, it blew my mind. sad
I have excel. When I open a .csv file up, let's say wal-mart, I see two columns of coordinates. I see a column for the name "Wal-Mart" and one for the address / phone number. Couldn't I take someone's .csv file and change it up? I'm not sure how I would get the coordinates?

The preferred method is

The preferred method is actually getting them by being at the location and checking your position with your GPS. Other methods are using data provided by the company/organization, or you can zoom in on Google Earth and get the coords from there.

Other methods are starting to get into questionable data origination and are not recommended for use on this site.

Good luck smile

Well we already know politics are out

Well we already know politics are out, and now a few of you feel you also need to control the topic because someone wanted to created a religious POI and you didn't agree with it.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Don't like the conversation in a node? then click on by, why on earth would you guy's make such anti-religious remarks in an open forum?

I sure don't want to hear your just Kidding around, because thats abusive and insulting behavior inciting religious hatred.

If a person wants to follow L.Ron Hubbard, he or she should be able to without religious persecution.

Grow Up!

:)

I am a critic of the church. I guess I should have made that clear? I kinda didn't want to give that away. However, the scope of my questions will be on making poi's. I'm such a newbie at this.

I got Google Earth and inputted a address. Now, I'm trying to find where to get the coordinates in the program?

The coordinate should appear

The coordinate should appear down at the bottom of the map image. To make it show in decimal degrees, go to Tools>Options>3D View>Show Lat/Long and change the option there

HTH smile

Another Resource

Here's another resource for coordinates:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocode

Visualizer is great too,

Visualizer is great too, just make sure the location returned is correct. My address comes up way down the street from where my house is due to the geocoding algorithm.

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

So, if I take another .csv file and then copy/paste the coordinates in plus add the other information in Excel, will it work in a Garmin?

Yep! CSVs are actually

Yep! CSVs are actually pretty easy to edit in notepad, or other text editor. smile

Mike

Yes

Use one of the POI's from this site if you need to see the order/format the rows should be in. Then use POILoader to upload it to your device.

I hate Excel

I used to use it years ago. I'm having issues with it.

Something is wrapping the text and putting it on cells below. Instead of keeping the information in the same cell.

Some people when they make

Some people when they make their POI files like to add line-feed characters in the comment section to make the line separate out and look less cluttered.

so..

"John Brown, 1000 West First St, Austin, Texas" in a CSV file can be made to appear like this:

John Brown
1000 West First St
Austin, Texas

with properly placed characters.

Is this perhaps what you are seeing?

Wrapping

Are you sure it is placing the text in another cell vs. expanding the cell you are in?
Highlight your suspect cell(s) and go to
FORMAT --> CELLS --> ALIGNMENT
and look at the check boxes under the title "Text Control." Make sure they are unchecked. Also, try manually expanding the column you are in so the text will fit.

Alignment

I think it's taking the alignment and formatting info from my document I'm getting the info from.

Then take the data

theplunger wrote:

and do a "Paste Special" "Values" or "Text"

GPSVisualizer will do a bulk geocode of the addresses, but there are usually errors in the values returned. For some lines it will return the correct street level location, others will be the city or even zip code where the location could be miles off.

If you use GPSVisualizer to build the base file coordinates, load it into Extra_POI_Editor. You can then see if the location shown on the map is a street that matches the name. If it doesn't, double click on the name and it will bring up a screen allowing you to geocode a single address. Tell it to code, the "grab" the coordinates and update the file.

Extra_POI_Editor is a wonderful program developed by one of the members here and can be downloaded free. Do a search using the file name and the thread will pop up with the link to TurboCC's page.

Same Issue

I'm still having the same issue.

Normally when you copy something into excel it all goes into one cell, and the remainder is hidden.

When I copy text off of a website it copies "as is" and all four lines go on four different cells. That's my problem.

Direct copy of the HTML code

Direct copy of the HTML code will do wacky things in excel.

Paste special
Text

That should help you out.

Update

I've found if I double click inside the cell, I'm able to paste the text inside that cell only.

What didn't work?

theplunger wrote:

It didn't seem to work.

I guess we're not clear on what you are copying and where you are trying to paste it. If you are working off a text document, try saving it as plain text. A CSV is just a plain text file that can be edited with any text editor. Excel just happens to read it and based on the placement of the commas puts the file into a formatted spreadsheet.

If you are copying from a web site and the source material is HTML, then right click on an empty cell and type S (Paste Special) V (Values or Text) and return.

If you are copying from a PDF, then convert it to a document before pasting it into Excel.

I seem to have the swing of things

The only thing is I have so many to input. This will take forever. There are 139 locations to do in the USA, and I've done 27. LOL

Should I post the file so ya'll can take a look at it, and make sure I'm on the right track?

Yup!

Welcome to our world. mrgreen Creating POI files from web sites is time consuming. Been there, done that, got that t-shirt.

The best you/I/we can hope to do is maybe find some small shortcut that works on the particular website. The problem is, when you move on to a different website, that shortcut doesn't work because the site is built differently.

Think of some of the files on the POI Factory that have thousands of entries. shock Tools like GPSVisualizer are OK, but sometimes produces inaccurate results so you end up doing them manually, anyway.

The one bright spot is once you get the initial file built, maintaining it is usually much easier.

I have a lot of work to do

I have a lot of work to do. LOL I guess I'll reply back when I'm ready for someone to review my work. Wish me luck that I don't go insane doing this. smile

Time Consuming Endeavor

theplunger, I wouldn't even consider starting on a file with 3000 lines in it until you are sure that the better half could care less. I've been pretty much at it since Jan 09 on a couple of files and "she who must be obeyed" is starting to question my sanity. Something about the fact that I should do something more constructive. 49th aniversary coming up and it's an even bet on the big 50. razz

Have fun. I think I have seen too many wrong results with Geocode. Don't bother with it myself. mad

We can see if the address listed in the poi matches the coordinates, but if we knew where the source data resides, then we can check against data entry errors.

Cheking

No one needs to match the coordinates to the street. I've done so with the aid of the Extra POI Editor program.

I really just want to make sure I've done the file right overall. This is my first POI file.
I hope I've done a good job. smile

If it is fine, how would I submit it to the site?

there's good reasons

Ive actually considered this....
i must admit, i am known as one of their critics,
and i know i'm on thier enemies list.

I've actually considered going to the local centers to get GPS readings, and posting them, so they'll be available for other critics/picketers. Of course, there's probably some Scientologists here who might be interested in this too

As far as duplication goes, there's overlap on other POI files. There's a Target USA, and a Target California. There's my Orange County Cigars file, and a national cigar file. Actually I like to keep the OC cigar file separate because i've visited all the shops in the file to be sure they're not, well, "hookah" stores, aka their main business is drug paraphernalia. Scientology has generated enough interest over the last few years a poi file dedicated to them might be a good idea

gonna check

I'll go get some readings this week on the Local sites.....

do you have the "missions" listed to?
the scientology missions are on a diffent page on the church site.....

get readings

Great - includes the missions.

I imagine there are people here who have developed an interest in this subject because of the news about TOm Cruise, and "Anonymous" pickets the last few years. If you have, could you take the time to visit the local Scientology church/mission and get actual readings for us? please?

Cool

I'm a critic too. I got the idea when I "visited" a out of town location. I had a bit of a hard time finding it. I could have used this file. Making this might help get others out of the house and to there nearest location.

If you ever wish to send me information I can add to the list or more accurate readings that would be great. I've asked a few forums to help me in gathering information.

FOr sure smile
THe local missions here seem to move a lot....so I look them up every few months....

I was actually just over by the main ORg in Tustin yesterday, to get pictures. Didnt get a gps reading though.

ANyway, i'm debating on submitting the local Narconon. I'm not thrilled with Narconon, but i'm less thrilled by the idea of people picekting drug addicts trying to get off the stuff. Then again. having it listed in the Scientology file would let people know it IS scientology, despite the confusing name that makes it sound like the better known and more generally accepted Narcotics Anonymous

anyway, I'll get back to ya in a day or 2 with readings from the local orgs/missions...

Check your contact email

The subject says it all.

Addresses

THere appear to be no addresses in the file,
just lat/long

Having the addresses is a good idea - often gpsvusualizer is way off, but normally my garmin unit will find the place just fine with the address...

So id suggest adding the address to help with error correction/verification

whatever works, as long as

whatever works, as long as its correct

Front Groups?

I was sitting here pondering wether to include the Scientology based drug program Narconon. I'm wondering about possibly adding all their front groups to a poi file....ABLE, CCHR, and the like
thoughts?

submit it?

Was wondering if you actually planned on uploading the file to the website?

If any of us find corrections that need to be made, you can update the file then...

a suggested addition

ya - in the LA area

Yes, I'm in the LA area....
I have been intending to get out and get actual readings at some of hte local Orgs, just been lazy. ITs 95f...too hot for much but an occasional beach siesta.

Actually I'm down in Orange County, the county immediately south of LA County. We've got 1 Org, 2 missions, and a Narconon here. Been looking for an excuse to go up to LA and goof around anyway. THis might be it...BUt be patient. I'm debating on taking a trip to vegas for a week or so here in the next couple days. I';ll definatly get a reading on the Las Vegas org if i go
