Another Garmin Icon trick (for your PC display)

Ever think that the Nuvi Icon in your PC's "File Manager" was too dull? Here's how to change it. I apologize if someone else already covered this.

For some reason, my PC uses a different icon in "My Computer". It shows a map being inserted to an envelope and the word "Trial" at the bottom of the icon. Haven't found the location of that one yet.

Prerequisite: A different or custom icon you would like to see.

Also: If you are not competent at manipulating files on a PC - THEN DO NOT DO THIS!

1. Connect your Garmi to your computer and wait for connection beep.
2. Open "File Manager".
3. Left click "Garmin Nuvi" Drive.
4. Right click on the Autorun.inf file and select Notepad to view. On my 660, it looks like this:

[autorun]
icon=Garmin\nuvi_drive.ico
action=Garmin nüvi
label=Garmin nüvi

5. Note that the 2nd line points to an icon in the Garmin directory on the Nuvi. This is the icon that is displayed in File Manager.
6. Close Notepad.
7. Open Garmin directory on Nuvi.
8. Rename nuvi_drive.ico to old_nuvi_drive.ico (or whatever you like).
9. Copy new icon to Garmin directory and ensure that it is correctly named nuvi_drive.ico
10. Disconnect Garmin wait for beep and then re-connect Garmin.
11. File Manager (not My Computer) should now display new icon.

WARNING: DO NOT EDIT THE "Autorun.inf" FILE, UNLESS YOU ARE EXPERT ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT THE RESULTS WILL BE!!!!

?

Metricman,

When you say "File Manager", do you really mean Windows Explorer? I am under the impression that the old File Manager program within Windows was removed 10 years ago. And, both My Computer and Windows Explorer display the same icon on my system -- a nice picture of a GPS. I've never seen the map-into-envelope icon you mention -- I feel cheated. The nuvi-drive.ico file is the only icon file on my 660. sad

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I changed mine

just like any other folder you wish to identify:
find garmin folder
right click
click properties
click customize
down at bottom click change icon
select the icon you want
click OK and you are finished

Yes, you are right. Sorry, my AIX (Unix) was showing.

If you are skillful enough, or brave enough, you can search online for info on how to change it in My Computer. Use:

icon change "my computer"

as a search string.

That's true, but you will have to do it on every computer you hook the Garmin up to.
