Dead Quiet!

Hi Folks,

I don't know about your town but it's scary dead around these parts! I know so many of my friends that have been laid-off as well as my wife having her hours cut that it's not pretty. Combine that with the cost of fuel and groceries going up, I feel like I'm on a sinking ship here.

That's part of the reason I haven't been around here much lately, just nothing new to report and we can't really afford to go anywhere either.

Looked at the value of the dollar?

While it would be very easy to play a political card, have you watched the value of the dollar on the international market. Since the big debt bill was passed, the dollar is falling in international markets so the price of oil goes up to compensate.

You're Right

When all the Treasury does is print more money, that's what happens, its value goes down. So much for stimulating the economy.

Wonder how I should spend my $250 government stimulus check?!? Guess I'll just put it towards my gas bill.

Can we just start calling the bank bailout, Financial terrorism.

It's your Bailout money paid to banks that is raising the price of Oil. The banks are using your money to Screw you again and buying Oil futures and driving the price up.

Big Wall Street banks such as Goldman Sachs & Co., Morgan Stanley and others are able to sidestep the regulations that limit investments in commodities such as oil, and they're investing on behalf of pension funds, endowments, hedge funds and other big institutional investors, in part as a hedge against rising inflation.

These investors now far outnumber big fuel consumers such as airlines and trucking companies, which try to protect themselves against price swings, and they're betting that the economy eventually will rebound, that the Obama administration's spending policies and Federal Reserve actions will trigger inflation — or both — and that oil prices will rise.

refiners are operating at less than 85 percent of capacity, which leaves them plenty of room to churn out more gasoline if demand rises during the summer driving season, the price of gasoline at the pump has climbed 28 cents a gallon from a month earlier to $2.33 or higher in some areas.

Dead Quiet?

Not here!!!!

Fortunately, I live in an area the the Jobless Rate has actually gone down (Hampton Roads).

The tourist areas are not doing as well, but all the convenience stores are begging for qualified help and there are plenty of jobs in other categories out there. Traffic on I-64, going to and from VA Beach or Nags Head NC, is a big problem on weekends. The FM Traffic is a boon to have when traveling to Newport News on Sat. or Sun.

Housing is still a buyers market, but sales are improving.

The Military presense in the area makes for a very stable economy.

Anyone looking for a great area to live in, should check out the Tidewater area. Close to the beaches and the Appalachian Foothills are 2 hours away. Gasoline prices are usually 15 to 20 cents cheaper than the national average (there's a refinery in Yorktown). If you want city life, there's plenty of that. Or, if you like Country living, there's plenty of that as well.

I like it here, which is why I've been here since 1958.

Gas is now $3.00 per gallon

Gas is now $3.00 per gallon here in California! It's been going up each day as well as the price of food in the stores. There are so many unemployed people here that when Wal-Mart posted an ad for a door greeter, 10,000 people applied for the position.

It's UGLY HERE!

Dead Quiet? could be sooner than you think.

All the convenience stores are begging for qualified help? I don't think a family can live on a minimum wage tourist type seasonal job!

Ok so the Williamsburg economy does well from Memorial day till Labor day, then poof it's gone big time and ditto for entire sea coast.
The gas prices will dictate how well your season goes for rest of this year. Your Gas might be .15 -.20 cents cheaper per gallon there, but folks have to travel to get there.

So I wish everyone luck around the country depending on vacationers this year, once the auto plants and dealers start to close adding to bleakness.

I've seen some businesses

I've seen some businesses get locked out as they fail to pay rent. But things are still fairly busy.
