Nuvi 780 from StreetPilot 2710

I've had a StreetPilot 2710 for a long time... very used to it.

The other day, I picked up a Nuvi 780 to replace it. The 2710 will go into my wife's car (she wont use it a lot)...

My first experience any of the Nuvi's is the 780.

There are already a few things that are different.

o StreetPilot had a remote (really liked that)

o Nuvi does not display speed when in route mode. This is very annoying since I am used to seeing speed in all modes AND because the Nuvi actually displays the speed limit of most roads on the display.

This is apparently the way it works.

o Lack of where you are info. By this I mean in the 2710, you could see what the address you were near as you drove down a road. Can't seem to mimic that in the 780.

o Lack of popup turn info. This is not really bad, just different. On the 2710, a half panel notice would show up on the right side of the screen to let you know a turn was coming. The 780 does basically the same thing on the screen itself, but it was not nearly as noticeable right away.

o FM transmitter in the 780 (weak). Will have to play with it more. I put a 8gb card in it and loaded it up with some music. Might be okay, if the FM transmitter were stronger. need to play around to see if I can get a cleaner connection.

o Haven't played with the Bluetooth stuff yet.

Overall, I like the unit a lot. Mounting is certainly less bulky (use the dash mount as the heat would be problem on the suction mound on the window).

Plan on looking at adding POI's (which is why I am here). Haven't tried it yet.

Oh, it would have been nice if the unit came with an AC-DC adapter to use it indoors. Spending hours in the truck while I was playing around with it wasn't going to happen so I got one from a local store.

I've pretty much already decided to upgrade to another unit in a couple months. Some of the newer units fix the speed display issue and have the Doppler Radar stuff (I am into weather). Will just hand this off to my Wife who will hand off the 2710 to one of the kids.

Going to wait a bit as the one I am looking at is a lot more money.

.

You may want to also look at some other manufacturers. The newer Nuvis don't really add much over the 780. At least not enough to justify the price difference in my opinion.

And it doesn't appear that Garmin has any plans to dramatically improve their products in the near future.
