State Line POIs

I have been searching to see if this has been discussed before, but could not find anything. I would like to know when we are about to cross a state line. When crossing into a new state I get this kind of satisfaction that feels like we are really making progress!

As much as I would love a voice announcement saying for example, "Welcome To Indiana" - but I can see that won't logically work. So I would be satisfied with "State Line ahead"

Anybody have any opinions on this?

Something similar exists,

Something similar exists, Time Zones. The problem with that, and magnified with State Lines, is it would have to have a POI for every road that crosses.
Certainly you could start with major highways......
In many cases that Time Zone file is probably a State Line file also.

Using Mapsource

I did see the TimeZone file, and do plan to load on to my nuvi. Thanks.
I also agree that major highways would be a good starting point. I just tried using MapSource to zoom in to areas where Interstates crossed state lines and found that it shows a "feature" labeled "St/Prv Line" - so, I am creating a list of waypoints and will save as a gpx. So far, I spent about a 1/2 hour and was able to record about 30 waypoints for Interstates and US highways into/out of Indiana.

I am new at this so I am not sure whether I should upload my Indiana gpx to POI factory now or just wait until I have a larger file.

Heading east now...

There is a transparent map called US States & Counties Boundaries Map with all the county and state lines that you can enable on top of the existing NA map. It doesn't give you an alert but you can see when you cross the line...

It is available on the GPSFileDepot site.

Is there a time zone file for the older version of GPS?

For Nuvi 360?

State Line Announcement

You know, you could get the GPS to announce "Welcome To Indiana" and each of the other states. To do that, go to the web site http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and type in the "Welcome To" announcement for each state. Then set that WAV file as a Target (using Right click) into your POI file folder and name each of these sound files individually (eg. Indiana). Then create a CSV file for the POI points where the expressway or highway cross into Indiana (you could even do it your self with Google Earth to get the coordinates) and name that file the same as your sound file. I've done something similar for my Rest Area POI file so I get the announcement "Rest Area Ahead North Bound Lane". That way I know whether I should get ready to "rest" or hold it a while longer.

conflicting announcements?

I did not think that "Welcome to 'new state'" would work very well since the gps would not know whether you were coming or going - POIs are not direction sensitive (are they?). So, there wouldn't there be conflicting alerts - Welcome to Indiana/Welcome to Ohio. I think I'll continue creating one large file with an alert that says "Crossing State Line" which would be sufficient for what I want to accomplish.
Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the tip - I'll check it out. Having county lines displayed would be helpful.

I think it'd work ok

I don't think there would be much of a problem. You would probably want to have a shorter proximity alert, say 1/4 mi or less. You could also plot the coordinates to the side of the road instead of the middle. For example, on a north bound road set the coords on the east side of the road, for a south bound use the west side, east bound use the south and west bound use the north.
You could make your own recording to say whatever you wanted, coming or going.
I don't think you'd get conflicting alerts. Unless the road is a narrow one. Could be worth a try.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

identifying state lines as you travel

If you use the 2D map, all the state lines show up clearly and automatically (as dotted lines) when they are close enough show up on the screen for whatever zoom level you are using.

State lines POIS

To do a file with state line warning I think you have to do a file for each state with points going in to the estate. A WAV file must have the same name as the .CSV file. I have to try to see if this works.

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations

State lines

I beleive the state lines even show up in 3-D mode - I just wanted to hear a voice alert. I created a gpx using mapsource and created waypoints for most of the Northeastern states (uploaded to POI Factory, pending Miss POIs approval). Also created accompanying wav and bmp. For sake of simplicty I decided to go with "Crossing State Line" and set a short alert distance.

Yes, that's how to do it

This will occupy a good weekend, depending on how detailed you wanted to be... Your goal is to build a .csv file with the points where each highway crosses a state line. If I was doing this, I would start with the Interstate highways and once they were done come back and add the US highways, state highways, etc. Then include a .wav or .mp3 file with an appropriate phrase, use POI loader to set an alert point and you've got it.

You may also want to look at Extra_POI_Editor...
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21156
This is a really easy way to build the file; you can also include alert info and save it as a .gpx file and then in can be loaded in express mode.

Others may have an alternate way to do this, but this is one way that will get it done.
