Newbie Question - POI (Icons)

I just purchased my first GPS, a Garmin Nuvi 265WT. Is there a way to set it up so that the icons of my POI's show up on the map as I'm driving? As an example I downloaded the POI of all the Walmarts. I thought that as I approached a Walmart that I would see the icon on the screen but that's not the case. I know that I downloaded the POI's correctly as I can see them under Custom POI's on my unit.

Any help would be appreciated as I am interested in downloading more POI's.

Thanks. Rick

You are going to have to

You are going to have to zoom in real close to see the icons. On the 265 once you get close to the location the icon will show as well as any other custom poi icons you have. You did add a bmp icon for each custom poi you loaded correct?

Example
Walmart.csv
Walmart.bmp.

POI

Thanks for your reply Charles. I noticed now that when I zoom in I not only see the custom POI's I've added but all POI's. I guess I'd have to zoom in when I'm driving to see all the icons? I know someone who has a TomTom and he doesn't have to zoom in to see his cutom POI's and I was hoping that Garming was the same.

That is the way Garmin works

That is the way Garmin works with the icons. They don't want to clutter the screen.Tom Tom prefers to show the icons.

On my Nuvi 765 you can get

On my Nuvi 765 you can get the icons to appear always by changing the settings in Map Detail to "Most". I would imagine it would be somewhat the same on your 265.

According to the manual

According to the manual using the most setting could cause the map redraw to be slower.Have not tried it myself to test it.

.

You can have the custom bmp's show up as you are driving. As stated, you need to be zoomed in. 300ft or closer. Zoom all the way in, then back out three times, that will be 300ft. That will be 80, 120, 200, 300. Your map detail can be most, least or in the middle, the custom bmp will show.

Now, if you are driving past a walmart, that is set way off from the road, chances are you won't see the icon anyway.
