Not Enough Space Error

I am trying to install a map on my garmin 780 with Mapsource software but I continue to get insufficient space errors. The nuvi has roughly 1.4gb of space available and the map I am trying to load is just over 1gb per Mapsource. I have even tried to load the map on a 8gb card and get the same error. Any help is appreciated. GD

A couple questions

Are you using Mapsource's "Send to Device" method and trying to send the map this way?

How many map segments are in the map you intend to create? Garmin has a 2025-sgment per map limit regardless of its size--although that's not the error message I'd expect you to have if this is the issue.

For what it's worth, once you've got it working, I think it's a better idea to put these other maps on a SD card and leave the internal GPS memory to be used only by City Navigator, other Garmin files and the small POI files (as found here in POI Factory).

Good luck.

Map Update

I am trying to update the maps to 2010. Do I need to delete the old maps and then run map installer?

There should be a utility

There should be a utility program called Mapinstall when Mapsource was installed. It would be used to update the map on your unit.

Still having trouble

So I thought I had it figure out but still having problems. This is what I have done. I backed up the 2009 gmapprom file. Deleted it from the device. Using mapinstall program with 2010 map, I select the the area I want to transfer. Which is a little over 1gb. Click next...and get the insufficient space error. In windows explorer I hit properties on the garmin device and says I have roughly 1.4gb free space. Is there another file I need to delete off the device that references the old map still being on the device taking up space? What is a *.gpx file?

Ah

Ah, a map update.

No, you don't need to delete the previous map on your nuvi. The new map will overwrite the older map and POI, etc. files if you use Garmin's procedure. It may be likely that using Mapsource to add the 2010 to a nuvi will not delete the earlier version and this may be your problem when updating to the GPS.

I'm not sure why you're using Mapsource to update City Navigator to your nuvi. The 2010 Map update file (whether obtained from DVD or a Garmin download) will do all for you.

Procedure: Connect your nuvi to your computer with its USB cable. Have a live internet connection since you'll need it to confirm that the map is unlocked to your nuvi. If updating the map via DVD, be sure to locate the unlock code on the DVD's jewel case since you'll need to enter it when requested. Start running the map update program--the update process will walk you through the update process and will put the new 2010 map on your nuvi as well as onto your computer to be used with Mapsource. Following this procedure, the new 2010 map (and POIs, etc.) will replace the older map on your nuvi and will add the 2010 map (while keeping your older map) to be used on your computer with Mapsource. It's very handy to have both the old and new maps useable with Mapsource on your computer so that you can identify updated roads and POIs between the map versions. These older maps will continue to reside on your computer until you specifically uninstall a given map version.
