My Nuvi 660 issues does anyone else have these problems?

I have a Nuvi 660 with City Navigator North America NT 2008 Software 4.70. But I find that my location on the map is off. When I am driving and pass a street the gps will show I am just passing it. Another thing I noticed is that when I go off the route it will show me still driving on the route for about 1.5 seconds then will reroute me. Does anyone else have these issues?

You may Know

From your list of models, you probably already know this. Remember that your location is actually the "tail" end of your marker, so if using the triangle it is not the point at the top but the bottom. Are your other gps units using 2008 maps? It could be that they have been refined for your area in the newer versions.

Unless you are in the "offroad" setting, the gps will always try and put you on a road it has in the database...

GPS signal delay

For 1 these devices are small slow dumb machines... Second it has to verify your position with the GPS satellites and there will always be a delay.

Some GPS units like mine assume you are where it expects you to be and displays the position properly at speeds under 45MPH, and speeds over that it is always 50-100 feet behind me. Sometimes if I take an exit that runs close to the Interstate or side road, it thinks I am still on the Interstate until I am around 50 feet or so off course, at which point it recalculates...

Also remember that in some wooded, city (as in tall buildings) or mountainous areas, it may not be able to contact all 5 or 6 satellites and may only contact 3 or 4 which means it will not be as accurate, even at lower speeds.

Delay

That is true, rain also delays acquiring the signal from the satellites.

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations

Map Detail

Also according to how high you have your map detail set to will cause delays. You may want to turn down the detail and see if that helps refresh faster.

I have the same problem with my 650.

Thanks I'll try that I have the detail set to high cause I live in NY and I like to see all the streets. I'll set to normal and see if that makes a difference.

There is no SA delay at this time, the system is still in tact

There hasn't been a SA delay (Selective Availability) for nine years now.
The amount of error added was "set to zero" at midnight on May 1, 2000 following an announcement by U.S. President Bill Clinton, allowing users access to the error-free signal.
it was switch off in 2000 once the US military developed a new system that provides the ability to deny GPS (and other navigation services) to any specific area on earth in crisis without affecting the rest of the world or its own military systems.

Sounds like you need to have your unit sit in the mount facing a clear sky for about 30 minutes with out movemnt to refresh almanac data.

Setting the map detail lower

Also if you set the map detail lower does the GPS still take those roads into consideration when mapping a route or does it bypass them alltogether?

Detail lower does not bypass

If you lower the detail does not bypass the roads you are mapping on your route.
The lowering of the detail is to show only the streets. If you put at high resolution you can see all the pois on the route, which some times are a bit overwhelming.

When I travel in the city I lower the detail to one or two or even three bellow the maximum detail pending what I want to see.
When on the highway I lower a bit more to see how the road turns further down and if you need to find pois on the highway you do the same you as the city.
You have to play with your unit until you feel comfortable on your navigation methods.

Lowering the Detail

I lowered the detail to normal from high and it runs great now. Thanks

Great!
