I need HELP (no detailed maps found)

I have a garmin nuvi 260W. The other day I clicked on the map update icon on the garmin website. My garmin was plugged into my computer with a USB cable and when I unplugged my USB cable my garmin read "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." I can get by this screen by holding my finger on the screen. It then goes to the Where to/View Map page, but when I click on view map there is no map on there, just the car, no streets, nothing. When I go to the "Where to" section, I have no addresses or points of interest. It seems as though all of my information I had on here is now gone.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET THIS CORRECTED?

.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you somehow deleted your maps file.

If you have a backup file, you can copy the GMAPPROM.IMG file back to the unit.

If you don't have a backup, then you will need to call Garmin for assistance.

Mama

Are there things that should be backed up to your computer? do you have a list things you have backed up?

thanks

everything ...

I would back up EVERYTHING before attempting to move/delete/rearrange ANY files on the device.

As stated above, if you don't have a backup, you might want to call Garmin for assistance

Have you gone to Wrench/Map/MapInfo to make sure your map is selected? You should still have a base map even if there is no checkmark, but if you are zoomed in and local streets are gone, you may only see a white screen.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I like backups

I like to backup everything. I worked in IT, so anytime I add software to my computer I create a restore point. If something goes wrong, like to have the backdoor to escape.

.

Typically, I recommend that users back up the entire GARMIN drive to their computer.

That way if they "accidentally" delete something, they can copy it back to the device without having to send it in to Garmin, which is the likely outcome.

How?

How do we back it up? Is it as easy as selecting all files/folders, copy then paste? Or do we have to use Garmin software (if any) to backup/restore?

backup

the first thing i did when i received my garmin was to hook up to the computer .it recognized unit, open garmin, select all / copy /paste to garmin folder i created in my documents .takes a while but i have a backup image of my 255w and my 650 if something goes wrong.mine was 1.92 gb.

Nope, no special software needed. Just copy the files over.

I usually just select the whole garmin folder.

Note that it will typically take around 30 - 45 minutes or so. So be patient.

No detailed mapping

From Garmin:

The new mapping is not installing correctly on the Nuvi 2XX and Nuvi 2X5 units. It is attempting to install too much, and because of this, is causing the image to fail.

They are "working" on a "reactive" solution to this. Once again, no testing causes too many fixes to the fix.

We need to let Garmin know to test the updates prior to release, this is inexcusable because it causes a GPS to not function until the fix is released.

It is a "known issue", and if you call, make sure to ask to speak to a "Software Support Specialist", they are generally the one's that will be able to dial into your system and fix it better than the customer service folks, unless you get lucky.

lost map

thats happened to me but garmin is pretty good at sending the map file you need on dvd

Are you saying this results in all Nuvi 2XX and Nuvi 2X5 units or is it hit and miss?I install the 2010 maps and had no problems.I did wait a few days after the release before the installation.Have use my unit several times around town and have not spotted anything as a problem.

Thanks everyone

I want to thank everyone for their input.

When I go to the map info, I can't do anything with it because it is gray and isnt able to be selected. The only thing I see on my garmin is a white screen with a vehicle there....

I would give Garmin a call

I would give Garmin a call this morning. They may able to fix the problem without sending the unit in for repair.

If you call them please let us know the results.May help other users.

Yeah, that means that the maps have been deleted. A call to Garmin is the only fix.

I'm copying my Nuvi 760 content to my notebook as I'm typing this message. I was going to ask if 45 minutes sounds about normal. You've answered it. I still have 30+ minutes to go.

45 minutes to copy 1.5GB?? That doesn't sound like USB 2.0 speed. It normally takes about 10 minutes or less to copy 1.5GB from a USB flash drive to computer HD.

Your nuvi 760 only operates at USB 1.1 speeds.

DriveAssist 50 (stolen), Nüvi 2595LMT

Looks like it but why?

Are you saying it's a USB 2.0 but operates at USB 1.1? Or are you saying that Nuvi 760 USB interface is version 1.1? It's hard to believe that Garmin still makes a device with USB 1.1 interface.

I've been looking all over for Nuvi 760 USB specs where it says version 2.0 or 1.1. I can't find it in the owner's manual nor Garmin site. Is there any?

Btw, I moved 1.5GB Nuvi data from my notebook HD to a 2GB USB flash drive. That takes even longer to complete (a little over 1 hour). My notebook USB interface and the USB flash drive are 2.0

.

It's 1.1.

WOW... I'm surprised

I can't understand why Garmin choose an obsolete USB interface. That explains why map update takes a long time to complete. Well, I guess it's not a big deal because we rarely transfer huge amount of data from/to the device. Out of curiosity, are they still using USB 1.1 on 2009 models?
