I would recommend turboccc's program http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor

Download his great program, with your nuvi attached open file, search for your nuvi and go into the Garmin folder, find the file current.gpx. Then add, delete poi's as needed. Save as to your computer using a different name. I would recommend saving as a gpx file. You now have a backup of your current Favorites that you can do as you wish. Using the POI Loader from Garmin you can always reload them into your computer. Or you can just make a backup of your current.gpx file and save it to your computer.

What is in the gpx file? Is it the gpx I have loaded? or is something that Garmin has loaded?

As you add new locations to your Favorites from the touch screen on the 260W, the operating system software in the Garmin stores them in the current.gpx file.

This is not the same thing as any custom POI files (either csv or gpx) that you have loaded onto the 260W using POI Loader. Those POI files are all combined, by default, into a single file on the Garmin named poi.gpi.

I will have to put it back. I saved it on my computer, should be no problem.

Yes you can modify and add information.If you add information like comments to a file etc you will want to save as a gpx file to retain all the information.
