Tempe To Install Flashing Photo Radar Warning Signs

Tempe to install signs to warn of photo enforcement:

With nearly 75 percent of Tempe's photo-radar citations coming from two cameras on Rural Road between Rio Salado Parkway and Sixth Street the campus strip has built a reputation as a speed trap.

Tempe plans to install flashing signs warning motorists of the posted speed limit, how fast they are traveling and the area's photo-radar cameras. Lt. Noah Johnson of Tempe's Police Department said the flashing signs are similar to warning systems seen in Chandler and other Valley cities.

Johnson said Tempe thinks the warning system may further reduce vehicle speeds and accidents while notifying drivers that their speed limit exceeds the posted limits. That could also result in fewer photo-radar tickets, which costs drivers $171 and could increase their insurance rate.

"We're trying to get people to reduce their speed. Especially near that Rural Road area where there's pedestrians, bicyclists, students and light rail," he said.

That's Tempe, Arizona...

... just in case some readers weren't familiar with it.

I haven't seen those signs in action, but if they work the way the posting describes, I might actually begin to believe that the cameras are being placed for safety rather than revenue.

I tend to agree with you. I think more awareness is a good thing.

Agreed.
