MD Legislature Passed Speed Camera Law

I believe that the legislature has just passed a bill providing for speed cameras to be placed at work zones on the highways. Folks really should slow down for road construction crews...

PG County is next

I heard on the radio tonight that PG County is looking to install a lot of speed cameras and will probably be the first new County in Maryland to get them up and running.

It's amazing...

All the MD counties are screaming about budget deficits, but somehow they find money for speed camera's.

Joe, These things are the

Joe,
These things are the biggest money making scams out there. The Counties just sell the rights to a private company. The private company then sets up the cameras and takes care of the ticketing. Each camera can literally shoot 100's of vehicles per hour at 10mph over the speed limit at 40 bucks a pop. The cameras have nothing to do with enforcing the law, they are like free money for the Counties. Its disgusting. In fact the cameras actually endanger drivers. At some locations in Montgomery County, there has actually been a huge increase in minor accidents at some of the camera sites from people slamming on their brakes when they see the cameras, then getting rear ended.

Red Light & Speed Cameras

Perhaps what's needed is a petition with many signatures telling both the County executives & Governor O'Malley how unhappy voters are!

Fred

speed allowance changes

At least the bill alters the automated speed enforcement program in Montgomery County by increasing the threshold from 10 to 12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit for which a citation may be issued. Every little bit helps.

Speed Cameras

In 5 years you'll see them at every major intersection. It's too much to expect the County to pass up in revenue.

Wait & see.

Self defeating prophecy

If there were speed cameras every block, the revenue return wouldn't pay for the camera as no one would be speeding - or at least very few would.

You understand

You understand how these cameras really don't belong to the local jurisdiction don't you?
They are installed by private company's and then share revenue.

Now thats funny, this younger Generation doesn't respect themselves yet alone the law. I don't believe that for a second.

Oh, and the 'older' generation

Sometimes broad generalizations just don't work.

Speed Cameras

Yes, but I said at "every major intersection."

Fred

OK, around here

FZbar wrote:

Fred

that's about every other intersection on the major roads. The secondaries through neighborhoods have stop signs, speed humps, round-abouts and a myriad of other "traffic calming devices."

Don't have to wait 5 years

San Francisco is intalling traffic cameras on city buses. Tickets will be issued to violators spotted by these "mobile enforcement devices."

I think

I think the jurisdiction pays a portion of the installation.

Only Option

I guess we'll all just have to slow down a bit, huh? Then the "govment" will have to come up with some other gimmick to suck up our money. The lottery seems to be on the decline, and here in Maryland at least, slots are yet to make any bucks. I believe the govment in Oregon has suggested charging folks for driving, by the mile... Maybe that has a future. Then we can all elect politicians that spend less (is that possible?).
