Mio - gone but not forgotten

It seems like the Mio brand has suffered at the hands of the economy. The Mio brand has died - at least here in the US according to the article found here:

Mitac, the company that owns Mio and Magellan is facing stiff competition from the likes of Navigon, so time will tell if the Magellan brand is going to go the same way. I hope not because competition against Garmin and TomTom only drives forward competition, and we as GPS users end up the winners.

Internal Competition

This reminds me of Ford/Mercury GM/Buick/Pontiac/Olds/Caddy a little. Unless you have a large difference in product AND price, I don't see how you can support the separate brands and make a profit. But then again, my farming business didn't survive either so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

mio is great

I made the mistake of buying a garmin automotive unit before researching these things.. the mio can be modded more than most other gps units: they run windows CE and can play movies, do solitaire, along with navigating.

next gps I buy will be a mio... even if I have to get it shipped from the UK

"In response to the article published in GPS Business News entitled "Mio closing business in the US" on April 3, 2009, Mio announced that the company will continue the sales in the North American market. Mio will offer products in selected channels and launch new products in May. Mio emphasize that the company will also continue to deliver sleek, easy-to-use portable navigation devices to the market, and also accelerate the development of a variety of innovative GPS-based lifestyle products that extend the user experience well beyond traditional PNDs."
