garmin nuvi 255w

gave my nuvi 650 to my son (he was going to ca.) and just ordered 255w . made a mistake and bought a nav740 . great price but i think the basic operation of the garmin had spoiled me so i sent it back . one thing i didnt but i will do with the 255w is try and use it to its full potential. i have a 4gb sd card and plan on loading custom pois to it.lots of good people here and glad to be back .(ive been searching site for tips and tricks)

I have enjoyed having the

I have enjoyed having the speed limit sign show up on the map. You can edit favorites to include pictures, categories, and more. When you create a route, an antimated pane appears to the left of Go. Clicking on it opens map that shows the entire route. It also supports Panoramio Photos, has a trip log, and Where Am I. I think you will enjoy your purchase.

You can load many custom pois on the internal memory. I have 10 mb custom poi file with over 100000 custom pois - some with bmp icons and wav files.

The 255W does not have a mp3 player so you have to use wav files for alerts (I think your 650 supported mp3 files). This site is adding wav sound files in addition to mp3 files.

If you're like me, you will end up spending more time with it connected to your PC downloading / creating POIs and exploring all the features available than acutally navigating with it.

SD card

I also ran out and got an SD card. I have largely found with the 255W that it is unnecessary. There is a considerable amount of storage available on the 255W and if more space were needed, the languages that you don't use could be deleted.

When I download my POI's I do load them to the SD card but the next time I start my GPS I always copy them to the receiver.

I have a 265W and did not

I have a 265W and did not realize clicking on that would show turn-by-turn information - thanks for the info - I'll have to try that out.

On my 255, clicking on antimated pane next to Go opens map overview that you can zoom in to preview route.

I have to select Go and then click on the top green bar on the Navigation Map to get turn-by-turn.
