Saving favorites file

So........did a search on these words to no avail, is there a way to save the favorites file in case one needs to reset or downgrade SW version thereby losing all personal data and favorites? I'm aware the personal data will have to be reset but what about the favorites file?
Thanks!

mapsource

You can't just copy the file off the GPS, or more precisely you can't put that file back on the GPS and have the favorites reloaded. The best way that I know to save the favorites is to download the "waypoints" to Mapsource. Mapsource can let you reload them and they will show up again in the GPS. You can edit favorites this way also.

Yes you can. I just did it.

You can hook up your gps

You can hook up your gps unit to the computer.Go to the Garmin folder and click on it and find GPX folder and click on it.Make copy of current.gpx .Save it on your computer in case you need it later. If you have to put it back make sure to rename it different then current.gpx .Keep the extension just change the current.

If you want to look at your favorites and see if you need to make any changes you can as suggested above transfer to MapSource or go to http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and make any needed changes. Save it back as a gpx file using POI Editor.

you think you did

As I stated, you can copy it off just fine. But try editing it and just replacing it, the changes will not be there. And if you put it on a GPS from which the favorites have been cleared, there will still be no favorites after replacing this file. The file is basically read only, you can't just replac it and change or add favorites. But Mapsource can indeed add or edit favorites.

Note quite correct. You CAN load and edit the Current.gpx file (with Extra_POI_Editor for example) and save it back to the device.

What happens then is either the Favorites will have been edited OR a duplicate of the edited favorites will show up (you have then to delete the original favorite). I haven't yet figured out why duplicates appear sometimes but not always. But at the end of the exercise, I get edited favorites. At least that how it works on my 770.

Does not work that way on my

Does not work that way on my 250.

You HAVE to change the filename

When you copy the edited file back to your Garmin/gpx folder, you HAVE to change the name. It will not update your Favorites if the filename is Current.gpx. As long as it is called anything other than Current.gpx, this should work with all Nuvi's.

The gpx file is not a read

The gpx file is not a read only file since it can be written to or modified.

Multiple Favorite Sets?

If you edit "Current.gpx" as jale described, would you then be able to keep several sets of favorites that are not loaded simultaneously? Then could you have personal region or area files that you could load and unload before you travel to various locals?

Yes as long as you change

Yes as long as you change the name before installing back.As a suggestion why don't you download the favorite gpx file to http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and save as a csv file. Then break it down like you want by region and create custom poi files from them.Use key words to ID quickly. For example

Favorites Tampa Fl.csv
Favorites NC.csv
Favorite address book.csv

This would give you option to have a category for each custom poi file. Then move as needed from computer to gps if you still want to.

Still only one set of favorites

You still have only one set of Favorites. What I meant to say is that sometimes, the specific POIs you edited will be duplicated, with a 1 added at the end of the name. You have to delete the ones that contains the old data to keep only the edited points.

This is what I do...

Personnally, I accumulate my Favorites and then I grab the Current.GPX, edit it to add more information and then I save it to a different GPX which I will use with my other Extra POIs.

Let's review this. I open my Current.GPX and keep in Extra_POI_Editor only my "Friends". Then, I "Merge Open" these new POIs with my current "Friends.GPX" which I use in my Extra POI. I check for duplicates and delete them. Then I save to Friends.GPX and put the file back in the Extra along the other POI categories I have. POI Loader loads all of them back to the GPS. Then, I go back in my Favorites and delete all the POIs I have moved elsewhere. I do a similar process for other POI categories.

Like Jale said, editing the Current.gpx file works (at least on the 7x0 family), but duplicates are created sometimes. If you edit and save back Current.gpx to a new file name, you will *definitively* have all duplicates GPI. I think there is also a limit of Favorites POIs you can nkeep, but I never reached it (I think I read the limit is 61).

You can add, delete - etc to

You can add, delete - etc to your favorites using PeeExEditor on my 765T.
You can also make them a POI if you wish.

On my Street Pilot EASY GPS program also adds - deletes favorites.

There is no file manipulation needed on the unit itself using these programs. The program will merge, delete, etc.. as needed.
