Garmin c330

I have no experience with a gps.

I am borrowing a friends garmin c330 and hopefully taking it to costa rica.

How do I get a map for costa rica and load it onto the gps?

Is it as easy as finding a file online and putting it on a SD card and popping it in when we land?

Or are there a lot of other things I need to know?

I would appreciate any help and guidance.

Thanks

RN

I have a Garmin c320 so it's

I have a Garmin c320 so it's very similar. You'll have to buy the map for costa rica online from Garmin (or maybe other retailers who sell Garmin maps).

I did some research and found that Garmin doesn't have any maps for Costa Rica. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Costa-Rica-171/GPS-Costa-Rica.htm

Garmin's own map site doesn't show any Costa Rica maps.

Sorry.

what do you mean downloading 3rd party maps for costa rica? Are you downloading non-Garmin maps for Costa Rica? If so you won't be able to use them with your c330. The Garmin GPS only uses Garmin maps.

it is a thrid party map developer. there are a lot of them.

back to my original question, which no one seems to be able to answer....

how do i load these files onto the C330?

I would appreciate the help.

Please help me load the third party maps onto the c330.

thanks

I think you already have

I think you already have your answer. Your C330 can't use the maps unless they are from Garmin.

Hang in there. The c330 is somewhat old and not too many have experience with it. Fewer still have ever added 3rd party maps, but I'm sure someone will answer soon.

From where are you downloading the maps?

Typically, third party maps that are compatible with Garmin GPS units will come with an installer to install the maps in MapSource or if you don't have MapSource, you typically would use a program called sendmap20 to load them.

Costa Rica Garmin Map

You can find an amazing Costa Rica Garmin map here -

I highly recommend the route from Tamarindo to Malpais then to San Jose via a ferry. Off the beaten path and the most beautiful part of Costa Rica in my book! The stretch from Tamarindo to Malpais is amazing. Check out "little Hawaii"... just a half hour form Tamarindo and along the route to Malpias. You can make a couple day trip out of the route from Tamarindo to Malpais...but stay in Malpais for off the beaten path. Check out a video

Rent a car with a few friends and drive this route. My second trip was from San Jose to Osa Peninsula. The stretch from Tamarindo to Maplais on the back roads... yes the back roads...is an amazing experience. You can find Sodas (bars) in the middle of nowhere. It is along this stretch that you will see beaches and jungles that have gone untouched by the tourist. You will hear Howler Monkey's and see them too! (you will not hear or see the Howler Monkey's in Jaco)You can surf on some of the most desolate beaches in the world. You can sit back and have a meal in such a zenful place. You can find cabinas to stay at for as low as $10. Just make sure you get a good 4x4 and a Costa Rica Garmin Map.

Another trip to Costa Rica was from San Jose to Jaco to the Osa Peninsula. ( I like the Tamarindo to Malpais trip a lot more). The Suzuki Vitara got stuck once after running it through a river in the Osa Peninsula. The 4x4 transfer case got stuck in neutral. We were able to just move it a few feet with the help of some very nice Costa Rican kids. For the most part it is a very nice cheap vehicle to rent, but if you can, try to upgrade to one more up. We also used a Garmin GPS map to drive through the jungle at night. It was a life saver at times!

Do not speed ...cops are looking for an excuse to receive bribes. Do not pay them.

Pura Vida!!!

maps

I just recently loaded the North America 2010 maps on my c330. I got a SD card, in my case 2GB but all you will need is 128MB or larger.
Get MapSource and get the Garmin approved maps for Central America.
Load up MapSource, import or load the Central America maps in MapSource, highlight the areas you want to send to the GPS (making sure the SD card is inserted before you turn the GPS unit on). I would suggest just highlighting the entire country and maybe some surrounding areas as well. Considering similar areas in the US only took up 15MB or less, it will not hurt to just add everything.
After the areas are highlighted, go to the upper left under Transfer, and choose "Send to Device..."
Wait the 10-90 minutes for it to transfer to the GPS and once it is done, you should be ready to go.
