Speed camera's...how picky are they

We are about to get the red light and speed camera's in Quebec and I was wondering if they were set very accurate. By that I mean if a police officer was there with a manual radar gun he would usually not pull you over if you were only marginally over the speed limit, usually 5 - 10%. Do the speed cameras cut you any slack or is it 1km over the limit and your picture is taken?

Speed camera's...how picky are they

It all depends on the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction). They are the ones that decide how much, if any allowance will be made.

You could drive by the camera once a day and each day increase your speed 1kph. When you receive your first ticket you will then know the threshold! wink

I would start off assuming

I would start off assuming they are going to give me a citation if I exceed the speed limit. Do you know if your speedometer is accurate? So why take a chance? I never pass a police officer unless he is driving below the speed limit... If he's going exactly the speed limit and I pass him, I feel that I am asking him to pull me over... shock

No reasoning

The cameras have no reasoning like a Police Officer might. If you speed you get your photo in the mail.
I guess you could use Gadget Guy's algorithm to figure it out. Myself, I use the POI for the cameras and always know what around me.

A police officer you might talk your way out f a ticket, the mail man don't care when he delivers one or even know as far as that goes.

Speedometer accuracy

I have two vehicles, a Hyundai and a GM, of the two, according to my GPS at 100km/hr, the GM is spot on but the Hyundai shows 110km/hr. On long trips I set the snooze (sorry cruise) control to, using my Nuvi, 105km/hr and so far I have never been pulled over for speeding even though I have passed the usual hidden patrol cars with the radar guns in action. I know the speed cameras are located in more urban areas and are there to catch speeding over the 50km/hr limit but surely there is some limit range. (+ 1 or 2 km/hr).

Just a matter of time

It's just a matter of time, if it isn't happening already, before small towns start installing these cameras on the highways or main drags running through their towns, drop the speed to 20mph for one block for no reason than to raise revenue, put up a speed camera, and issue tickets with zero tolerance.

It'll be a high tech version of the old Smokey behind the sign enforcing the local speed trap to pay his salary scam.

I imagine most cameras allow 2-3 mph over, but I wouldn't bet on it. If they're aggressive enough to put up a speed camera, they're aggressive enough to enforce the speed literally as marked.

2nd that, trial and error

2nd that, trial and error (or ticket)

Thank you

I don't have any references

I don't have any references to cite at the moment, but I've heard it said a couple of times that the speed cameras in the Phoenix, AZ area will not trigger until you're going 11 mph (17.7 km/h) over. Of course, this doesn't really provide any useful information since you reside in Canada. My guess is that there is at the very least a 5 mph (8 km/h) over trigger point. Just a guess, though.

Passing an officer

I used to think that as well and I never pass one going the speed limit myself. But, I have watched cars pass me and the officer at 5mph faster than either of us are going and not get a ticket. I guess it depends on how long it has been since the officer has been to the doughnut shop.

Psst

Psst, there are police officers on this forum. The doughnuts and cops joke went out with the 20th century by the way.

Jw, I see your hometown is the same as mine. If you are on the east side you better watch your speedometer.......

.

Like others say, they probably set the speeds differently in different jurisdictions.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, they set the speed cameras for exactly 10 Km/h (6 MPH) over the limit. So, if the limit is 50 Km/h, then you will get a ticket for going 60 Km/h or faster.
