never blindly trust your GPS - a good article

here an interesting (and funny) article that reinforces the fact that you need to know what you have your avoidances set to, and not to blindly trust a gps unit!

It does happen

Most of us have probably experienced the "why is it taking us this way" situation. I have gone in circles more than once and have had to give up a time or two. These things ain't perfect yet.

Going in circles

I have had the same experience where the Nuvi directed a circular route. I did arrive at my destination but not in the most direct or shortest way.

Happens all the

Happens all the time.

Yesterday my Nuvi 360 took me to a dead-end at a locked gate with a stretch of about 3,000 yards of dirt "road" on the other side and a resumption of pavement at the end of that. Hey, it didn't know that subdivision had gone in about a year and a half ago....

Off road

When going through LA a few weeks ago my nuvi kept putting me on truck routes, I'm going 50 MPH surrounded by semis, and a stones throw away traffic is moving at 70 on the main freeway. Changed all my avoidances.

Consider the source

You have to consider the source of the original article i.e. MSN. Judging by the linked article on how to stop people stealing your wi-fi they're not what I'd call on the top of the technical heap. wink

Not Perfect

I have had times where I was routed off the highway and back on again on the same exit.

Always keep a paper map in the glove box!

Been flamed many times in the past for this statement.

And this is just proof that you really do need a paper map in the glove box. If something with the route doesn't seem right, it probably isn't.

Paper maps have been around a long time, and they even have errors.

I'm with you BobDee.

Paper maps don't have software, firmware or battery issues.

I always carry a set of maps with me.

One of the reasons I went with TomTom this time. I may be routed through the dead end street the first time, but then I can edit my map with showing it blocked and it won't try to route me that way again.

yes, but it doesn't always work with my TomTom.

When going to the airport my TomTom 125 takes me on a scenic route that costs an extra 2 miles to get to the airport. The roads are not blocked, they work, but it's the least efficient way to get to the terminal. Not sure how to resolve that one.

You are 100% correct.
About a year and a half ago I was interviewed by the WSJ about a post I made here concerning the issue misdirection by a GPS. I guess I would not let myself be pushed into the direction that the author wanted so my vignette was not included.
