Yes, there are several freeware and shareware programs available that will adjust the volume on mp3 files. Do a Internet search for "mp3 utilities" and you'll find a lot of listings.

I use nero's wave editor

Under volume, I use the normalize. Unfortunately this is not a free program and you have to do each file individually... sad

Unfortunately, mp3 volumes are often different from file to file, this can be a problem for songs as well as alerts.

The process of setting a bunch of audio files to a common volume is refered to as "normalization". There are good free tools that will normalize a set of mp3 files. One word of caution, some sloppy utilities do this by re-encoding the mp3. Since mp3 is a lossy compression, re-encoding is not a good idea as it will further degrade the audio. Better utilities tweak some parameters internal to the mp3 files to change the volume setting, which is a much better way to go.

I suggest doing a Google search on the words "mp3 normalization" and reading several of the top results to find a good tool.

I second using

MP3 Gain. It keeps the dynamic range in music while amplifying the song. It's really great with my MP3 player, I set the volume once and go through the entire unit without having to touch the volume control.

It stores it with the same name essentially overwriting it in place which may be why it takes a little time.

I use my copy of NERO, it has a nice editor to adjust and cut MP3's. You can take any MP3 file and select a clip out of it and use it for an alert. Old songs have some great lines for alerts..
