My only problem with the lifetime updates is if you buy it with only a short time left on your warranty or have no warranty and the unit goes belly up....your screwed...you cannot transfer the update program to another unit. You have just lost $120 or whatever you paid for it.

I asked that question of Garmin before I signed up for the lifetime maps and their response to me in writing was that if the GPS unit has to be repaired or replaced, even if out of warranty, the lifetime maps will then be transfered to the new GPS unit.

My post was regarding out of warranty. They want 2 to 3 times more to repair one than you can buy a new updated unit for. In warranty sure they will let you transfer to the replaced unit. I feel this lifetime map thing needs to be revised somehow to allow you to transfer it to a new unit that has never been registered before. That would make sense.

Has anyone who has tried this timed how long the process takes? Thanks

Yes

Yes, I did. I have cable broadband and think I remember that the current 2009.11 2GB download ran about three hours. The download speed was less than I normally see, so I wonder if a lot of folks were downloading with me or if Garmin somehow throttles the speed down. As the screen capture from the step-by-step instructions shows, my download also had "four connections" to Garmin's site via the Garmin Download Manager.

Once downloaded, the extraction of the map and its installation to computer and GPS can add another couple of hours.

All in all, don't start the process near bedtime! I'd suggest starting on a rainy weekend around lunchtime wink
