Help for Nuvi Newbie - Custom POI

Hello folks, new to the site. I've been checking it out for a few weeks and there's a lot of information.

I loaded a bunch of POIs onto a SD card, using the excellent categorization method discussed in this node:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/17095

(Thanks to all)

Everything appears to load properly and I can chose the new POIs from the "Where To". Here's the problem I have a bunch of rest stops for Maine loaded and I set up an audible alert of 1KM. Thing is they don't seem to be working. I go in simulation mode and it passes the rest stops with nothing. No Icon, no Alarm, Nothing.

Shouldn't these show up on the map as well?

Oh it's a brand new Garmin Nuvi 255.

Any ideas?

Did you use the POI Loader...

from the Garmin site? I have a Nuvi 760, so I don't know if your 255 works the same, but if you use POI Loader, it gives you an option to turn on alerts, and if you run it in manual mode, you can set specific (non-default) alert distances.

Yeah I did that...

Doesn't seem to work.

I have not tried it, but

I have not tried it, but from what I have read, they have to be within 50 feet of your route reguardless of your Proximity distance. The 'rest area combined' POI file on this site was created with coordinates at the entrance of the rest area.

You have to be zoomed in enough to see Icons.

Make sure that your Proximity Alerts are not silenced. TOOLS/SETTINGS/PROXIMITY POINTS/PROXIMITY ALERTS/CHANGE/CUSTOM POIS CHECKED

If unchecked, alerts will not sound.

Be very careful that the

Be very careful that the name of each part - the file name, sound name and icon name are exactly the same. Retype them to be sure. Then try again.

You should at least see the icon, unless something is wrong with the coordinates. If you do see the icon but no alert, try two things. First, make the distance more to be notified. Second, make it a "TourGuide" by adding that term exactly as I typed it without the quotes to the name of the file.

Which technique are your referring to? There are 3 different methods in that thread:
1.) Reloading everything, every time you use POI Loader
2.) Renaming POI.gpi files
3.) The ScrugneysGundogs method -- advantages of renaming without having to do the renaming.

What kind or custom audio file did you load? You don't have an mp3 player on that unit, so you must use a wav; it must be a very specific mono format, and you must have sox.exe in the same folder with POI Loader. Did you name the wav file the same as the csv/gpx, and did you check for multiple extensions?

If you can find the locations under WhereTo/Extras, they are there and they will have an icon -- either the default dot, or your custom icon. Was your custom icon named the same as your csv/gpx? You can verify what icon is loaded by going to any location under WhereTo/Extras, choosing the location and then choosing "Show Map" or similar wording (different on different models).

thanks for all the responses

thanks for all the responses guys. It appears to be a problem with the actual position of the rest stops. I edited the csv to move them to the actual exit ramp (on the highway) and things worked as they were supposed to grin .

Love my new Garmin!

You will find that the rest

You will find that the rest stop combined file has the coordinates at the entrance.Like one poster stated you can use wav files to get voice alerts for the rest stops instead of the bong type alert.
