what if everyone on this site got together and built a gps

what options would you want on it and why?

It would have a more flexible map system

It would have to be able to change a predetermined route. My GPS always takes me out of my subdivision on a route that has been blocked. Navtaq will probably never change it. I would like to be able to override a route that I know is wrong.

I tripped going up the escalator and I fell for an hour and a half!

what i reaaly would like is

what i reaaly would like is to be able to draw in new roads so you dont hve to buy a update every year, just a couple years. it seems as though when i got my 255w with 2009 maps in it new roads started popping up around my house.maybe a camera too, since it has a pic viewer already, just a idea i guess

+1 for flexible maps and detailed detours

I'm in the same boat with local blocked roads and new roads that Navteq will probably never update. A function like Tomtom's mapshare, even if only for use on your own personal unit, would save a lot of "recalculating...." nonsense.

Also the Tomtom ability to mark specific roads to avoid on detours, rather than relying on the "Wisdom of Garmin" (TM).

Oh yeah, also firmware that didn't include lagging, stuttering and features such as route optimization, language guide and currency conversion that work as advertised!

Ability to Choose from Multiple Routes to Destination

The ability to change to choose between multiple routes would be good. In many cases we are sent on a route that we know has more traffic, therefore, the trip is actually longer.

Faster refresh

With the GPS giving you an accuracy from about 12 to 50 feet, I would like to have road intersection on the GPS to match what is out the car windows. Having a street showing on the GPS down the road about a hundred feet when your setting at the streets traffic light is not a GPS confidence builder. I would also like map companies to do somehting with the map info people submit instead of trashing the mail/e-mail.

chances are satellite is data expired

Sounds like you grab your GPSr (cold start), plug it in, turn it on and go. sooner or later the almanac data expires with cold starts.

If your almanac data is not current you will find the condition you speak of above, being off at intersections by several feet or more. this may help make it a bit more accurate.

Leave it stationary looking at a clear sky for at least 12 minutes to download the latest almanac and ephemeris from at least one satellite.

This may help you understand it better:

Add a Pause

I would add a pause button- to when I pull off to eat, refuel, or potty break, So "Jack" will not get "concerned" and start recaculating.

NUVI 680, NUVI 5000, MS S&T,

Thanks BobDee

You're right as we just turn it on and go. I'll do the stationary update tonight. How often do you do the almanac and ephemeris update?

Our GPS

I would like to use data/image from google for the map, with both hybrid/map options. So what you see on the GPS is what you see on the road: REALTY
grin

Directional POI's

I would like to have Speed Limit sign poi's which were directional. If one is entering a city, the speed limit becomes 35 mph. Going in the opposite direction, the speed limit becomes 55 mph at that same location. I would also like for my ideal gps to display the speed limit of the road on which I am traveling.

Points of interest options+remember more permanent traffic data

- I would like gas stations, and only gas stations to show up on the large area (default) map. My garmin (2730) only shows POIs when you zoom way in, and then it shows all of the points of interest.
- I get the XM traffic data. If I turn off the car (GPS has no battery), it forgets the fact that a highway (I-64) is closed in St. Louis for the next 10 months. When I turn it back on, it takes about 15 minutes for it to figure out that the highway is closed... meanwhile, it routed me to take that closed road.
- An Audio input jack (including microphone?) as another source (in addition to XM/Audiobooks/MP3). That way I could hook up any old accessory and have the GPS control what is used and when.
- permanent volume hard buttons (including mute) so I don't have to work to get to the volume screen to adjust the volume.
- The main screen should show the time and altitude (as well as the speed) at all times.

I realize some of the newer units may have some of these.. but these are the things I'd like on my 2730.

Tim

I'll second that

One shouldn't have to shut off the radio or turn off the volume just to pull off the highway a short distance.

Radio Receiver

I would like mine to have a radio receiver, in such a way that the radio would go silent automatically when directions are given, very much the way it works with the mp3 player, but for the radio.

Similar to dgilb idea, but for any alerts, not only for speed ones. I have some highway exits and road hazards (eg. big winter potholes) that are only relevant in one direction.

No no

You all got it wrong your thinking to small why not teliport to your destination, why deal with any of the simple stuff go big, think big is what I say mrgreen

List alternate off-ramp or merging freeway names

My old built-in Panasonic GPS (2006 I think - it was the 1st model to have available XM traffic service) and other GPS's I've seen don't always give clear freeway off-ramp names that match the posted signs.

This happens especially when there are two or more similar sounding choices within several hundred feet - i.e. the one heading west or east and the GPS unit is lagging 50 feet behind your actual location.

It would be a helpful option to have the "navigator" list alternate names since the information on the maps aren't always what is posted on the signs. especially when there are multiple exits or freeways merging within 100 feet or so and the "navigator" directions aren't matching the posted signs.

This can be a real problem in roadway/ freeway dense areas - especially in downtown areas with multiple freeways converging in a small area.

I just moved to Ohio from So. Calif/ Los Angeles and haven't driven much here yet. Just setting up my Tomtom for its first use.

better and more real time

better and more real time traffic

Change the route

That would be my must-have new feature, for sure. Construction or accident issues are other reasons to want this, besides a wrong map. Garmin does make midpriced GPSs that more easily allow route overrides and inputs of premapped trips, but my Nuvi 370 doesn't (except kludgily, through "Detour"), and I don't want to spend the money to upgrade just to get this now. If I did need to buy a GPS new, now, though, I'd get this for sure.

JMoo On

.

What I would like is a GPS which works EXACTLY as advertised. No bugs, no glitches.

I know, I know. It will never happen. But a guy can dream can't he!!

I want some of what GadgetGuy is smokin'

But if I can't have that, I'd wish for a routing algorithm (and the data to support it) that would take traffic signal wait times into account. My experience is often that the calculated route will take longer to drive than one that has a greater driving distance but fewer stoplights.

What I Want in a GPS

I like the idea of the pause button or at least a mute button on the main screen to mute Jack when I really don't need to hear from him. I know there is a mute function on the audio screen but would like to see it moved to the main screen making one less stop to mute the audio when not needed.

Officer I'm sorry I was going the wrong way on that one-way street but my GPS told me to turn left ... Oh, I'm still getting a ticket, okay then the GPS will see ya in court!

any easier way to mute,

any easier way to mute, maybe a side button would be good. Pause would be good instead of turning on and off.
I think a biggie would be to include a radar detector in it.
IT would also be nice if you could draw on the map or click and drag so that you are essentially mapping your own way. Especially handy if you know that road is slow because of construction, etc. Similar to what you can do with MS streets and trips only on your Garmin screen.
I don't think these things are unrealistic and that they probably will be features someday. Hopefully soon.

Beam me up!
How about if you could plug it into your car's onboard computer and it would do a quick diagnostic of your system and point out where the problem's are?

Or add a little tube that comes out that serves also a breathalizer. If you blow more than a .08, it won't navigate you anywhere until you sober up!!!

Full local maintenance of custom-POIs

I would like to be able to maintain and organize POIs directly into the unit, without having to use the PC.

Some custom POIs I create from the unit, first I have to copy over to the PC, then add information (Phone, Address, Hours, icon, picture, alerts info and further comments), and then Load back to the unit.

I should be able to do all of the above right from the unit (organize, and enter as much info as I want) in addition to loading from the PC, for those custom POIs that are created externally.

The ability to use sd cards

The ability to use sd cards for Inland Lakes, or golf courses would be a nice feature.
