Newbie asks: (how many POIs, etc.)

I have a NUVI 760.
I just did my very first POI download/install. It was the Red Light/Speed camera ones. That leads to these questions which I hope you more experienced guys can answer:
1. There must be a limit as to how many POI's you can add. The Red Light/Speed camera ones totaled approximately 3,300 POI's. Am I approaching the limit?
2. If I get carried away and download lots of POI files, for instance, say, all the ones that appear to be campgrounds in the western US, Elks Lodges, rest areas, etc. am I asking for trouble? Will the GPS screen become cluttered? Will I be inundated with proximity alert messages?
3. About the SD card slot. If you insert a blank, formatted, SDHC card, say a 4GB card, does that add to the storage capacity for POI's?
4. To change the subject just a little, do you think that in the fairly near future Garmin will offer a GPS that has Red Light/Speed camera info built-in?
I ask about the Red Light/Speed cameras because I just got caught in a speed trap in Prescott Valley, Ariz. In this case my NUVI 760 AND my speedometer both said I was doing EXACTLY 35mph. I knew I was in a speed trap area and was doing exactly the posted speed. The ticket said approximately 47mph. I had a hearing and explained there must have been a glitch, because I (and my wife who was a passenger) knew I was doing exactly 35. Guilty said the judge.
I'm looking forward to your info and suggestions.

Welcome to the group!!
1. There is, but I do not recall. I have over 700,000 custom POIs installed.

2. The screen will become cluttered but only when you are zoomed in to a certain point, and usually in very urban areas.

3. Yes, but even all mine still fit internally.

4. I think they change to often to be added. It also might be a risk for them to include it, people are a bit lawsuit crazy these days.

Always ask to see the radar gun in the squad. Got me out of 2 tickets!! It will piss off the cop, but it is their job. If they refuse to let you see it, be sure the cop includes that on the ticket he issues.

Custom pois don't take much

Custom pois don't take much space. To see how you are doing.Hook gps up to computer.Go to the drive for Garmin.Right click then click properties. You will see amount of space you have left.

Most custom pois you have to manually set the alerts. It will be up to you what pois you want alerts for.If you get carried away setting them like most of us did when first starting out.You will see how annoying they can be.

SD card will increase storage for many more pois but you can get a lot on the unit itself.

Have you still got the Track log (ie CURRENT.GPX) from this time period? If you look at the 'Track Properties' with Mapsource, it computes the 'leg speed'. This would help confirm (or deny!) your story...

Out of curiosity, how many .GPI files are they stored in?

That rather depends on what's in 'em wink

This firm's Custom POI's occupy between 50 and 400Mb!

No you aren't approaching the limit. I think the limit would be set by the amount of unused memory, when you run out of memory you have reached the limit.

2. If I get carried away and download lots of POI files, for instance, say, all the ones that appear to be campgrounds in the western US, Elks Lodges, rest areas, etc. am I asking for trouble? Will the GPS screen become cluttered? Will I be inundated with proximity alert messages?

Yes, no, maybe. I have two files on my GPS that are huge. They are all of the railroad grade crossings in two states. I have Redlight and Speed camera files, etc. My last upload using POI Loader showed around 30,000 files. In certain areas and at certain zoom settings, I get a lot of icons showing up but most of my POI files are for finding stuff. They don't set alarms or alerts.

3. About the SD card slot. If you insert a blank, formatted, SDHC card, say a 4GB card, does that add to the storage capacity for POI's?

Again, yes and no. The SD card will add to the available memory but the unit will treat it as an expansion card, not an addition to its internal memory. You can put POI's, mp3's and jpg's on the card and the GPS will find them and use them just as it does files loaded into it's internal memory. But you have to load them onto the SD card by manual choice. The GPS won't decide to store files on the SD card by default. You can have POI files stored on the SD card and in the internal memory and the GPS will use both of them.

4. To change the subject just a little, do you think that in the fairly near future Garmin will offer a GPS that has Red Light/Speed camera info built-in?

I don't think so, the files change every week and updating the dedicated POI files is a pain.

You have a choice, pay the fine or appeal. Appealing will cost you money and time, paying the fine will only cost money.

Radr Gun follow up

Funny story about asking to see the radar gun. Quite a few years ago I was in driving on some rural road in Florida. Coming down a hill a saw the cop sitting off the road in a school zone. I was going 20 mph. So he pulls me over and says I was going 40. I ask to see the radar gun and the cop says to me "we don't have to show you but since I see from your plates your from New York so as a courtesy I will show it to you." We walk over to the police car and he leans inside and yanks out the power cord. Says "oops I'm sorry" He says if you want to fight it I can go to court. I just asked him how much the fine was going to be? $40 he says just mail it in. No problem and off I went. Just my contribution to a small Florida village.

Above the average poi file

Hornbyp. That is not no average custom poi file there.I guess it would take up a lot of space. It is more like a super Tour Guide.

Reply:

Keep in mind that the alerts for red light cameras goes off 1/4 mile from the camera. In a populated area like New York it could be a block or two over and the alert will go off.

A few friends have said that they were driving on the highway and the red light camera alert went off. The cameras were on local streets nearby.

It is better to be safe than sorry but you might want to change the alert distance depending on your circumstances.

An SD card will hold lots of POIs

I have a 2Gb SD card in my Nuvi 200W. Nearly 700,000 POIs---all from here, stored on it. The only drawback is that it takes so long for POI Loader to transfer them over, I can only add them all in overnight.

SD card storage

My suggestion is to store as many POIs in the internal memory till it runs out of storage space, unless you have a need to keep your POI files separately on the SD card.
