Equatorial suggestions

OK, so in several months my wife and I will be in Ecuador. We'll be heading to Mitad del Mundo, or Center of the World. Now here's the question. What cool things can we do at latitude 0.0 that we can't do anywhere else on earth? I've heard of balancing an egg on a nail at the equator, but does anyone else have any other suggestions that we can do and take pictures of.

I'm hoping to take a GPS unit that shows latitude and longitude so we can get a picture of the coordinates when we are on the equator.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Mitad del Mundo

Thanks

Thanks Bob and grush for the links. grush, you hit the nail on the head with Megan Lyle's antics at the actual equator. That's what we're looking to do. Photo ops abound! Spare batteries and memory cards are a must.

Hope you have a nice time, and I would imagine that Galapagos was a natural selection for a vacation spot for you and the wife:)

Be Well,

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

Good one!

That's a really good one one! laugh out loud If Darwin could, he, like me, would be laughing at the play on words.

Thanks for the chuckle!

bad science

Those "equatorial" experiments (balancing eggs, spin of draining water) sound like fun, but they're bad science. The coriolis effect is very small, far too small to be the determining factor in the direction of spin in the test (see link for a similar exhibition where the tester had the water spinning the "wrong" way!). And the difference felt in the coriolis effect would be incredibly small with a latitude difference of 10'. Eggs can be balanced at any latitude, at any time of year, so of course they can be balanced at the equator.
