I'm sure this question has already been asked, but is there a way to create a poi file using addresses rather then latitude and longitudes? If so, can some one please point me in the right direction wither it be a tutorial or another thread?
Also, I was wondering if there was a way to sift out locations that are already loaded in the garmin system. I know that may not make sense, so here is an example of what I mean: I loaded the poi file for starbucks, however a lot of the locations in the file are already loaded on my gps, so therefore I now get two hits when i search for the closest.
Please let me know if I didn't make sense.
Explained Well

You explained it well, but that can't happen as a result of custom-POIs and built-in POIs, because you search for them in different places. Custom-POIs can only be found under Extras, and the built-in POIs won't show up there. If you are getting two locations, exactly the same, under Extras/Custom-POIs, then the file either has a duplicate listing, or you have loaded two POI files, perhaps one on the unit and one on a card.
As for using only addresses to build the POI file, you can generate the necessary lat/long per location by geocoding -- a search here will give you lots of reading material. There are sites that will batch handle a list of locations with addresses.
Also, you should add the model Nuvi to your profile so that you get more precise responses to any questions. Different models behave differently.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

If you use GeePeeEx Editor then you can type in the address and the program will use GeoCode to get the latitude and longitude for you.
