POI use

I was wondering, in what form most people here use their POI's so they show up on the map when you are near/pass them?
With or without a proximatey alert?
Accessed through 'Where to..Extras...Custom POI'?

these links will help you to understand!

Thanks, but i know how to make POI and load etc...just not sure the best way for them to appear, seems like a lot with included POI it's easy to click that and see whats around but to do the same with custom POI you have to go to a completely different location on the GPS to see what is around the area...or am I doing this the wrong way?

If you are asking about the custom poi icons..

Then you have to be zoomed in, and in 2d on some gpsr's.... And when you zoom in then you can't see as much area around your location so ....

Otherwise yes to see whats near in custome poi's you go to Where to>extras>Custom pois>all categories>all catagories...

So the best way probably would be to make proximatey alerts or could I use TourGuide with just a bmp to pop up on map when near by?

I only use proximity alerts

I only use proximity alerts for red light and speed cameras pot's.... Otherwise your gps is going to be alerting you quite a bit... enough to drive crazy in a town like Los Angeles... and your custom poi icons do appear if you are zoomed in to about 300'..

Rest area POIs

Problem trying to set alerts on my Nuvi 750. I downloaded and installed the rest area poi file as per Garmin program utility. A poi.gpi file appears in the Garmin Poi folder as expected, but I do not have the "Proximity Alerts" option when I go to Tools>Settings>Proximity Points.

Proximity Alerts

You need to set your proximity alerts in POI Loader for each POI file you are loading. Make sure POI Loader is in 'Manual' mode rather than 'Express' mode. As each POI file is displayed, you will have the opportunity to set a proximity alert or not.

A suggestion: IF you put the "Rest Areas Combined" POI file on your 750 I suggest you set the Proximity Alert distance to somewhere between 3000 and 6000 ft. to give you ample time to get in the correct lane with safety and ease. This seems to be the general consensus of users although some prefer the distance out even further.

Since the rest areas are usually 25-45 miles apart you don't get that many alerts.

Thanks for the reply--I like to see about a mile notification.
