QWERTY for Nuvis...close enough anyway!

I came across this thread for a qwerty keyboard on the garmap.com website. I did it with my 200W so I would assume it will work with other widescreen Nuvi's.

http://www.garmap.co.za/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4525&KW=qw...

It uses the British English.gtt file in the TEXT folder under the GARMIN folder when the nuvi is plugged into the USB port of your computer.

Open the file with NOTEPAD. Scroll down to the upperkbrd line and copy and paste the following, without the quotes:

"Q--------WERTYUIOPASDFGHJKLZXCVBNM,.-------"
"q--------wertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm,.-------"

I can't get the spaces to show correctly, so changes the dashes to spaces. There are 8 spaces after the Q's and seven spaces after the period's. Save it as British English.gtt and go to the settings on your nuvi and change keyboard layout to British English.

Somewhere down in this thread, I stated I get 10 characters across. This is wrong, I can only get 9 max. The Q is out of place, but this should give a very usable keyboard that is almost QWERTY!

Good luck!

QWERTY

Good find! Thanks

Excellent

Thanks for posting the info.

Great hint! I opted to use

Great hint! I opted to use this arrangement as listed in one of the other posts:
12345678PQWERTYUIOASDFGHJKL,ZXCVBNM,./?[];9

12345678pqwertyuioasdfghjkl,zxcvbnm,./?[];9

It puts the P where the 9 should be, but that's easy enough to adapt to.

The nice thing about this is that the standard keyboard arrangement is still there as American English, so can you switch from one to the other at will.

Thanks for info.

I assume this works better

I assume this works better on a Widescreen than on a standard 3.5 Nuvi?

Can anyone confirm?

Also interested as I use the 680. Anyone?

Looking at the 205 series

Looking at the 205 series with wide screen and 705 series they come with the Qwerty keyboard like a computer. So maybe the wide screen does display better. Not sure why it would not work on others.According to the orginial poster it works on the Nuvi 200.

I'm guessing the QWERTY would lay out better on the widescreen. The OP is using a 200W, which is a widescreen.

Widescreen is correct

Mine is a 200W which is a widescreen and capable of displaying 10 characters across. I should have stated this should work for all widescreen Nuvis.

I have corrected original post.

Sorry!

Interesting

Interesting find, thanks for sharing.

No dice for 3xx and 6xx

Well, after investigating the other website, I'm out of luck for my 680.

No XX.gtt file in the 3 series and 6 series of nuvi.

No Text Folder

"It uses the British English.gtt file in the TEXT folder under the GARMIN folder when the nuvi is plugged into the USB port of your computer."

I have checked and do not have a Text file on my Nuvi 350. Any idea why? Could it be because it is not widescreen?

Thanks

Keyboard Function

The keyboard function must have been implemented differently in the 3xx & 6xx series software. My widescreen 660 doesn't have the .gtt file either. crying

I don't think it's because

I don't think it's because of your Nuvi not being a widescreen model. Mine is a standard Nuvi 200 and the process worked just fine. The only problem is that, because there are more characters on the screen than before (the way I set mine up), the "buttons" are smaller so I have more opportunities to make typos.

My 255W has it

I would have never thought that ALL the widescreen Nuvi's didn't have the qwerty layout.

Typing on my 660 drives me nuts. It takes me sooo looong to enter a word because of the alpha-layout. mad

Whatever software designer came up with that idea should be forced to have to use one. exclaim

The keyboard layout and the poor FM transmitter are really the only two things I don't like about my 660.

Not for the 6xx series.

Thanks for mentioning this. You saved me a trip!

I can only get 9 keys max.........

Sorry!

I also have a 200 W and can only get 9 characters across, max.
I did however change the name from British English to QWERTY by changing the text in these lines.........

(lang) Qwerty_English(/lang)
(desc) Qwerty English(/desc)

I couldn't get the < > signs to display correctly so I put lang and desc in parentheses.

here is what worked for me

here is what worked for me (nuvi 205, not widescreen):
1. copy Garmin\Text\British_English.gtt to Garmin\Text\Querty.gtt

2. open Querty.gtt in Notepad and replace the hdr section with this:

<hdr>
  <lang>Qwerty</lang>
  <desc>Qwerty English</desc>
  <type>Primary</type>
  <sort>0</sort>
  <cpage>65001</cpage>
  <pnum>006-D0981-03</pnum>
  <ver>2.40</ver>
  <upperkbrd>12345678PQWERTYUIOASDFGHJKLZXCVBNM</upperkbrd>
  <lowerkbrd>12345678pqwertyuioasdfghjklzxcvbnm</lowerkbrd>
  <maplang>British English</maplang>
  <gdnclang>British English</gdnclang>
</hdr>

best luck, alec

Thanks for the tip

But I am also not able to use it on my 660. Too bad. It is a pain to type on the alpha keyboard layout.

Good find

I will have to check to see if my Garmin model will work or not. Thanks.

better late than never

I just found this post after someone mentioned a keyboard fix in another post. Great patch. I've been struggling with the ABCD keyboard on my 265T and this is just what I needed.

It was likely my post you

It was likely my post you saw in the thread on older nuvis being good enough.

I set mine up like this:

(Upper)QWERTYUIOASDFGHJKLZXCVBNM P1234567890 -'",.
(Lower)qwertyuioasdfghjklzxcvbnm p1234567890 -'",.

The puncuation does have its uses, though it's mainly to fill up the bottom row. On my 200W it ends up looking like this when I search:

QWERTYUIO
ASDFGHJKL
ZXCVBNM P
123456789
0 -'",.(space)

Much better than alphabetical. Unfortunately, I haven't discovered a method of changing Garmin Mobile XT's keyboard over to QWERTY or a QWERTY-style keyboard, because it doesn't use GTT files. In fact, I'm not sure I can, which is a little disappointing.
