nuvi 885T available now

For those interested, most of the local Best Buy stores here in the SoCal area are now listing the nuvi 885T as being in stock for in-store pickup.

Hopefully, it won't be discontinued in a few months like it's predecessor. rolleyes

nuvi 885T

Thanks Dorkus Nimrod.

Best Buy online says it ships in 1 day or so, but Amazon says it's being released February 28. Crutchfield also shows it in stock.

BTW..Amazon shows the nuvi 880 was first available on May 26, 2006. This has to be wrong, right?

Can anyone confirm when the 880 first went on sale?

Keep us posted!

Seems to me that it was around July or August of 2008.

Nuvi 885T

Hello folks,
I just pick up the 885 from BB.

Nuvi 885 doesn't have 3D building + no traffic maps option compare to 765.
Improved for the 885 is the Lane assist and pretty much that's all.
Screen look a bit better.
So far mine is not reboot or frozen like 880.
Same map version 2009 NT. Still not update map like newest Navigon. (couldn't find my home address with 885, Navigon does show up my home which built in 2007)

.

That really doesn't seem like much of an improvement in the model line to me...

Well, it also is voice

Well, it also is voice activated and has the removable battery, which might be important to some people. I think I would give up 3D buildings to have these additonal features, but the price is a little hefty.

My point is that it's barely an improvement over the 8x0 series which only lasted 6 months (if that) before Garmin dumped it. The 8x0 series already had voice activation, with a removable battery. For Garmin to totally discontinue the 8x0 series, add only a couple of features (and not even include 3D buildings or even ecoRoute) and then proceed to call it the "new" 8x5 is just plain silly and a slap in the face for early adopters of the 8x0 series.

I feel the same way. I feel

I feel the same way. I feel I got ripped off after spending over $800.00 to purchase the 880 and have it discontinue so soon and on top of that with the new firmware, still was left out in the cold for the additional icons that some of the cheaper units were given..

Aah, I see what you mean. I

Aah, I see what you mean. I was comparing it to the 785. Yes, not much improved over the 800 series.

No Traffic Maps Option?

Hi stevennguyen. What do you mean by no traffic maps option? The 885 has to have MSN traffic. Do you mean you don't get traffic reception in your area compared to FM traffic on the 765?

Nice upgrade from my 660

I just ordered a 885T from GPScity.com this afternoon. Received the shipping info via fedex about 4 hours after entering the order on web. Saved $100 on it. While $699 seems like a lot for an auto gps today I can remember spending almost 2k for my first Magellan unit several years ago. Looking forward to many improvements over my trusted 660. The voice activation will be worth the cost for the upgrade for me imho.

Traffic maps

Hi Grush,

The traffic maps option is when you click on traffic icon in the menu, it have option to show traffic map only which is show major road with matching color (green, red, yellow) for traffic conditions and the normal map which regular color.

Nuvi 765 have that option and both 880 & 885 doesn't. Nuvi 765 use the FM traffic and I test both FM & MSN on 885 doesn't show up that option either. It's convenience if you driving on freeway and major road.

On more thing on the 88x series when using with the FM traffic, it take a while to show up traffic condition and only very few freeway v.s using FM on 765 show up faster and lots more freeway traffic.

re: Traffic Maps

stevennyguyen, thanks for clarifying that, and for your report comparing the 765 to the 885.

I would think the 885 would show the green, red, and yellow lines for traffic conditions. That's weird if it doesn't. I would also think that while using the FM traffic the time for it to show up would be about the same.

The 88x series does use different software though, and there are probably some hardware differences too, so who knows?

Anyway good luck and if you have anything else to report after trying the 885 out for awhile, please let us know.

The 660 was my first unit I

The 660 was my first unit I ever purchased and since then I have bought a 680 and 880. I really miss my 660, it had features that I miss in my 880, such as the roads appearing in the menu bar as you cross the street instead of showing the street you are driving on, even though it displays the streets in the map grid, I was used to them showing in the menu bar.
