another newbie seeking assistance (Lots of STUPID questions)

Introduce myself: Purchased Garmin Streetpilot 2730 (w/XM) for use on a motorcycle. Planning 4000 mile trip over a week in May. Garmin does some things well, some things I'm disappointed in. Any help with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated:
1). I use Mapsource on my home computer, and it routes differently from point to point than does the Garmin (???). So, if I go through the work of creating a route on the PC, it may get all changed up on the Garmin. Is this normal?
2.) Many, many, many question about points of interest. I am very concerned with gas stops on a ride from St. Louis, MO to Grand Junction, CO on I-70. I would like to see upcoming gas options on the Garmin, but if I play with the settings, I get all POIs displayed at the same time. I tried to upload some 'custom POIs' from this site, but It didn't seem to change anything. Either none of the POIs show up, or they all do! I would love to be able to zoom out 50-100 miles, and see on the scren when the next gas station is (preferably near the highway, not 10 miles off the highway). Am I just expecting way too much? (likely)
3.) I see the option to download to the GPS in Mapquest, but I never see it in Google maps. Google maps only lets me send to e-mail. (I've tried this on 2 pcs with both Internet Explorer and Firefox... same results)
4.) MS Streets and Trips (old version) allows to plan for stops, fill-ups (in the version I have, it does not account for time for fill-ups). I'd like to to do the same in Garmin / Mapsource. Is this possible. Idea would be that I would know if I was 'on schedule'.
5.) I've seen lots of POI files for gas stations. None for Phillips 66. Regardless... is there a master 'all gas stations list' or 'all gas stations within 2 miles of interstate list' or something of the sort?
OK... Newbie Tim has already overstayed his welcome here, but I am really frustrated with some of this.
Thanks for the answers (I hope), and all of the knowledge I have gotten from this forum by searching already.

1.) Can you exchange the GPS for a model that supports routes and is made for a motorcycle? You should be able to use a waypoint to force the 2730 to match your other route. Once you pass a given waypoint, you can add a new one if one won't do it. A series of waypoints could be saved as a POI file.
2.) Does the 2730 offer you the option to search under gas stations for Near/Along-the-current-route? On my Nuvi, that would give a list of stations within 3/4 miles from the freeway.
5.) A file with every gas station in the US would be extremely large and impossible to maintain. Likewise on trying to maintain a file (much less create one) that included all gas stations within 2 miles of any fwy in the US. However, if the 2730 includes the Near/Along-the-current-route search option, that would be just as good.

Tim,
I just looked at the specs for the 2730 and see that it does support routes, so I'm as confused as you as to why your GPS changes a route you transfer from MapSource. I can't edit my original post.

Ok, here's my shot at it.
1. Except for the Zumo series, every Garmin unit will recalculate the route when you import it to the unit. Motorcycle riders have long been using the 26xx, 27xx, and 28xx line for their trips. The way around this limitation is to include enough actual Waypoints in the route to "force" it to go where you want it to go.
2. On some older units like that one, you were able to select a specific database to show or not show. See if you have an option in the map setup. Otherwise, it might not be customizable for this and you will have to manually search as others have suggested.
3. You should be able to send Waypoints from Google Maps. You should be able to send Waypoints and Routes from MapQuest.
4. MapSource does not have this functionality. I would recommend that you continue to use S&T for this.
5. Nope. Sorry. But once you poke your way around the site, you find that it's not too difficult to load the ones you want.

I do believe you need to download the garmin communicator plug in to send your waypoints from google maps.

Help?

Question 1 has been pretty much answered by others. As to 2, a lot will depend on the range of a tank with your bike and your riding habits. For a list of fuel stations near the super slab, download the various truck stops. If you put them all into a single folder, then searching for fuel will give you the 50 closest, and they should all be near exits.
3.) I see the option to download to the GPS in Mapquest, but I never see it in Google maps. Google maps only lets me send to e-mail. (I've tried this on 2 pcs with both Internet Explorer and Firefox... same results)
Have you tried Yahoo? It will also let you download.
4.) MS Streets and Trips (old version) allows to plan for stops, fill-ups (in the version I have, it does not account for time for fill-ups). I'd like to to do the same in Garmin / Mapsource. Is this possible. Idea would be that I would know if I was 'on schedule'.
I don't use mapsource as my unit doesn't support routes, but on a 4,000 mile roundtrip in 7 days means averaging almost 600 miles a day. That's a lot even in a 4-wheeler. At around 150 miles to a tank, that's 4 stops. Figure 15 minutes a stop, add an hour overall. 150 miles going through that part of the country will take about 2 1/2 hours or an average of 60 miles an hour giving you a little cushion. That's still 10 hours a day in the saddle plus stops.
5.) I've seen lots of POI files for gas stations. None for Phillips 66. Regardless... is there a master 'all gas stations list' or 'all gas stations within 2 miles of interstate list' or something of the sort?
Like I suggested, load the truck stops and carry a little extra.

Welcome to the site, and I hope we were able to answer some of your questions and give you some things to think about.
OBTW, I can be considered a retread but haven't ridden in several years.

Look at this
I was playing around thinking of a poi for the Phillips and conoco stations and found this for you if your intersted. some facts i seen on this one website.
Conoco,Phillips,Union 76 stations on I 70 from Mo, to CO. there are 134 stations, Total distance is 1094 miles, Look at this website, you could actually make your own poi from the info listed. would take some time to do it.

thanks all
good replies. Truck stops may be the way to go! I have never made a POI file, so the Conoco/Phillips/Union thing may just be a pipe dream for me. (I'll try to figure out how to make a POI file by searching here).
Regarding Google maps... I was trying a 'route'. I think it used to work, but it no longer does. I read on another thread that perhaps google stopped supporting this.
Thanks for all your help and input for this newbie!
