Nearby Restaurants on Map as POIs?

So I've got a Garmin nuvi 750 and note that favorites/ geocaching icons and the like show up on the live map, very cool. But ...

I once borrowed my brother-in-law's old eTrex on a road trip and really liked its feature of doing a restaurant find, then going back to the live map, where it shows the upcoming restaurants like POIs. so you could decided when to stop. It wasn't that we set a route to them, it would just let you know how close (tiny numbers) and where they were (several at once). then we would decide between all the restaurants nearby based on kind of food and how close they were to our route.

don't suppose there's a way to make the 750 do that? i know if you stay on the restaurant list it shows arrows and distance, but you can see there could me more too it smile especially with such a nice big screen.

I can't believe nobody is

I can't believe nobody is interested in this. I understand if you go to favorites you can list nearby restaurants with a little arrow pointing hte direction and a mile caount, that's something.
But the only way to see icons for them on the map without choosing them is to go to the static overhead 2d view and zoom WAAAAY in and then tap each tiny speck with your finger to get a label. While driving , right?
Okay, so how do I get labels back? I understand they used to be there but that has been changed either by a model or a software update. Any hacks to get labels to show next to icons again?

On my unit (660), you can set a rout and then go to the built-in POIs and look for the "Near" button at the bottom. Click "Near" and then "Along-the-current route". I will come up with a list of locations and their distance ahead. All locations are within .7 miles of the route. It doesn't work well on custom-POIs. Does that work for you?

Ok

I believe the answer you are looking for is "it is not possible". At least from what I've read about the nuvis and my (very limited) experience with mine.

If I understand what you're saying about the eTrex (what model?), that would be a super handy feature to have on the nuvi. It would be fabulous if Garmin would add that to the nuvi so that it could be turned on and off.

Now that is a feature I

Now that is a feature I miss. I did have that feature on my Sony that I purchased some time ago. It had little icons along the way for not only restaurants but gas stations the icons for chevron, 76, etc.... and it was cool. I took it back and got the Garmin 770 because the directions and route was poor and also the signal was not as good. Guess it was a trade off. I didn't realize that Garmin didn't have that until I go it. But the signal and directions are better. Guess that is the real reason we buy them anyway.
If someone knows a way I would love to hear it. I can see how they might be nice to turn off from time to time, because if you did have you wouldn't want it all the time.

forgot to check in

and how about that it was busy while i was away. I'll have to try the near routes trick. As I mentioned, you can go to points of interest and pick food for example and get a list with arrows and distance, but it's not on the map, so you have to go back and forth (and it's not a toggle).

fyi, the eTrex Legend I think it was, the black and white version, did the labels and lines to nearest POI by category.
