What is Mapsource?

I have come across many references to Mapsource on this forum. What is it and can I obtain a copy from Garmin free of charge if I have a good reason? Is it a DVD or a download?

It is Garmin's mapping software. Some say that you can get it sent free from Garmin, but the first support tech that I talked to wanted $15 for it, and the second wanted $15 and shipping and handling (even though I didn't want it handled). There is a free download available, but it says that you need to already have it to use the download. There is a workaround (told to me by Garmin, so I doubt if I'm violating any POI factory rules in posting this). Download Garmin's "training Center" and install it, it is software for their exercise line of GPSs. Then you can download and install MapSource without needing an older copy.

Just a note that although it is absolutely possible to get MapSource this way (and this method is endorsed by Garmin), you will not have the detailed maps in your MapSource. You will only have a basic basemap.
If you want/need the detailed maps, you will need to call Garmin for the DVD.
