can't get nuvi 660 to work with voice alerts

i have a nuvi 660 that i loaded all my poi with the garmin poi loader, i have all files, the csv or gpx and the bmp and also the mp3 for the file , example speedway gas station, i have all three (speedway) (speedway.mp3) (speedway.bmp) i get the tone alerts but no mp3 alerts, thanks for any insite.

Nuvi 660 voice alerts

Usually one of the following may be problem:

Be Sure your alerts are in the same file as the poi, and that they share the exact same name (excluding extensions).

Be sure to check the box for proximity alerts and enter a distance, in the POI loader menu.

Under the wrench menu, select proximity alert, and be sure they are turned on.

To see if there is error with the mp3 file itself, try playing the file with the nuvi 660's mp3 player

Double Extensions

Also, make sure none of the files on your computer have double extensions, like: speedway.mp3.mp3

Ding

If you are getting the ding, then you are loading the file correctly (but you didn't say if you could see the icon or not). So I think that you need to make sure that the nuvi can play the mp3 file (copy the file to the mp3 folder on the nuvi and see what happens).

As suggested make sure that you don't have double extensions as that will cause grief. Look at (in MS XP, other OS similar) My Computer / Tools / folder options / view and make sure that hide known extensions is not checked.

I'm not sure if you realize that the suggestion of copying the custom audio alerts onto the unit was just to prove that they could be played on the gps. You can now delete them from the unit since they are compiled into the POI.gpi file (or at least they should be).

thanks, i did not realize

thanks, i did not realize that, the other day when i could not get it to work correctly, i copy and pasted all the mp3 files in the poi folder in the nuvi, i shouldn't of done that, all deleted now and reloaded with the poi loader, now i dont see the extra mp3 alert files, my other problem was double mp3 extensions, thanks for your help.

MP3 Alerts on a 660

Here is one other thing that may bother you with MP3 files on your unit. Some members have noted the MP3 music stops and the 660 skips to the next song when an alert is played. Converting the alerts to .WAV before loading them seems to stop this. You will need a program called SOX.EXE located in the \Garmin folder on your computer in order to load and play the alerts as wave files.

MP3 to WAV

If you follow a_user's suggestion, you'll need to convert your MP3 sounds to WAV first:

Just the alerts

Just the alerts. You can leave the music as MP3.
