? on how to open

I have a question on how to open the poi file in the garmin unit itself. I read somewere here but can't find.
example: hook up my garmin to computer and click on the garmin folder and you see all the files, click on the poi folder and it shows the poi file but when I click on it, it wants to know what program to open it wit, so I picked the excel to open but it opens it with a bunch of jumble that makes no sense to me doesn't look like the cvs file. I thought you can go into this file and make changes so you didn't have to relaod through the poi loader everytime you want to make a change.

Is this possiable to do... And if so how Thanks

Reloading POIs

My experience has been that anytime changes are made to a POI file, I have to reload them all via POI Loader. If there is an alternative, I have not heard of it yet.

you don't

The poi.gpi file on the gps itself is in a Garmin specific format created by POI loader when the POIs are transferred to the gps. Nothing on your computer would know how to deal with it (short of perhaps a hex editor, and that would be of little use). What is it that you are trying to do that you would want to "open" this file?

I thought it would be easier to make changes in the file on the gps so you don't have to go through and load all the differant cvs file if you only make one change to one file. I f there is an easier way I would like to know.

It sounds like you are looking for the rename method. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16639

Yes there it is thank you very much.

Now I have tried this and the poi file that I loaded did not show on the garmin just the file that was loaded through the poi loader was there. I can see the file before I unplug it from the computer but when I go into the extras nothing, just the file I have from the poi loader. Any thoughts,,,,,,

I think you must be misunderstanding the technique. You should end up with multiple gpi files, each loaded separately with POI Loader. Once loaded, each of the POI.gpi files needs to be renamed before another is created.

There is also an alternative method but I think it would only confuse things at this time.

Figured it out

Ok I have figured it out thanks to all of your help.

Now to recap (I want to make it simple for people like me) what I did was seperate each file into it's own folder.
example: create a new folder renamed to redlight camera, then loaded it with poi loader and then went into my computer and open garmin file and open poi and renamed that file to redlight camera, and did that for each file I have and it worked out just fine. All files were loaded and all worked out great, so now when I make a change and only have to change 1 file I don't have to load and set all the files,,,very cool cool
