Waypoints

OK, I know that many of you will be shaking your heads with this one but I can't seem to find an answer. So here goes: what the "heck" is a waypoint? My 350 apparently has the capability of 500-waypoints but I have no idea what that means.

Thanks and sorry for the juvenile ignorance on the subject.

WAYPOINTS:

Waypoints are different stops along your trip or destination

.

Welcome to the site.

A Waypoint/Favorite is a location that you can save on your GPS unit. You should see a button for this on the menu screens of your unit.

Waypoints/Favorites can be saved from the built in POIs, from an address, from coordinates (on most units), from Custom POIs, or from browsing the map.

Waypoints can be used in routes.

No sorries needed for the ignorance. smile I would ask, however, that you be careful with the language in posting as we try to be very family friendly here.

OK, here is where I am confused

My manual states that I can only plot one stop for each route. For instance, if I want to goto a place in Toledo, Ohio before my final destination of Cleveland, Ohio.

So, if I have 500-waypoints, why can I only plot one stop on each route?

I hope this makes sense...

When used in the spec to which you refer, they are talking about Favorites.

Does this make sense?

500 waypoints can be saved on the unit in Favorites. It doesn't say you can use them all in a given route.

Yes, those are two different things.

You can save locations on your GPS unit that you might want to have quick access to for routing to. For example, you might have friends, family, favorite restaurants, fishing spots, stores, etc. These might be items that you want to save for future reference. They might be items that are not including in the preloaded data.

Saving routes on the unit and adding more than one waypoint to a route are functions that aren't available on all units.

However, if you have your Favorites saved, then you can manually select them from your list in sequence in order to route to them.

If you use the Garmin

If you use the Garmin software mapsource to create these "favorites", within mapsource it refers to them as waypoints, but when you transfer to your GPS they go under Favorites.

One way to plan for a trip, is using mapsource which is free download from garmin web site, to create all your favorites (waypoints) and download them to your gps

Terminology, Gadgets, and gizmo's

A waypoint is a set of coordinates that identify a location. The equivalent of putting a push pin in a map or a flag pole in the ground. Different hardware and software interfaces will use different terminology to describe the same set of coordinates. My Garmin 660 will allow me to save 500 waypoints (or favorites) which i can select and tell my GPS to take me to the location. Some GPS devices and computer software will allow you to use multiple waypoints to build the best route to get to each of the store locations using the shortest distance, fastest time, etc.

See how simple that was, well maybe not, but hang in there you will get the lingo down just in time for a new feature to be added to one of your favorite gadgets or gizmos. - smile
