3D map display question

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if it is an illusion or if the 3D-map display on my Nuvi 200w sometimes it zoom in or zoom out automatically depends on where you are while driving.

The 3D map display does not have legend for you to see which level of zoom you are viewing, therefore it is hard to see which level you are viewing at. But sometimes I thought I set the level zoom at certain level, but the zoom level changes somehow, or it may be an illusion I'm seeing.

Does anyone know of a way to detect what zoom level you are at when viewing the 3D-map on the GPS?

Thanks

It seems that the closer you

It seems that the closer you get to your destination the more it zooms in? Or the faster you drive the more it zooms out?

Oh wait, that's a car commercial.

Seriously when routing and a turn is coming up the Nuvi will zoom in to show more detail as you approach the turn. When "Boris" tells me "Exit Riiighht" tje map will zoom back to what it was before.

Zoom level

I also think it depends on how far back you set the zoom level. If you have it zoomed in really close then I don't think it goes that far but if you zoom out it will go out pretty far.

I've been playing around with the zoom feature and I have it zooming out maybe a few miles as I have a couple stretches of road that it is really far out AND it puts the road up and down even I am traveling south. But around 6.5 miles it starts zooming in with it really zomming as I approach the next manuver it wants me to execute.

I'm going to zoom in a little closer and see what it does at those long distance points. I guess it's a matter of finding settings that you like.

I think it remembers minimum zoom level

I believe it remembers the minimum zoom level that you set. There's a speed component to this, too. So after zooming in to show a turn, it will return to what you had previously set. I prefer a more zoomed out view at highway speeds and when I reach 60mph or so, it will zoom out to the level I had previously set. Both my 350 and 760 behave this way.

My own preference

I prefer a 3D zoom level where I can see at least 2 streets just ahead of the vehicle icon.

my 765T does this

my 765T zooms in and out appropriate to the directions it is giving me when on a route...I believe it does this when not on a route, just in map mode, as well.

as for the legend, it is in the lower right corner, but it is way too small for my old eyes to see while driving...and of course you have the + and - buttons in the upper right that will override the zoom until it needs to auto adjust for you again.

I didn't like the zoom feature when I first got my nuvi, but now I really like that it does it for me.

Thank you very much

Thank you very much everyone. These are great information.

For mine

If i loose the Zoom level I Zoom all the way in and then come back out 4 times. I Think i seen that on the tips and tricks site.

auto zoom

My 2720 auto zooms. As I approach a turn, it gradually zooms in giving me a tight view of everything when it is time to turn. Right after the turn, it zooms out - how far out depends on the distance to the next turn.

Things that go thump...

Whenever I stare at it too much to see how much it zooms in on the turn, I can almost here an upcoming *THUMP* followed by a loud "What the @#%$^ were you doing?". Happily so far I've only heard "Recalculating".

Speed Sensitive

I have the 200W and use 3D view... There is some sort of speed sensitivity for the zoom level..

I've tested it on a stretch of road...
@50mph: shows smaller residential streets (zoomed in)
@60mph it zooms out a bit more, those residential streets go away...

Speed sensitive

Thanks to you and JohnC

This explains something that has had me puzzled for some time. Crossing an elevated causeway my screen would zoom out as I got on the causeway and several miles later zoom back in as I came down. I always wondered if it had something to do with the elevation but your observations explain it.

Entering the causeway I'm at 30MPH then up to 60 before returning to 30 on the other side.

All is clear now...

thanks

I've..

I've experienced the same thing with my unit. Never the less, I trust my Garmin to lead me to the right location.

I tried it

I tried zooming in closer to have it zoom out slightly when its not showing a manuever (does this make sense), maybe a couple of miles and it doesn't seem to be speed sensitive but distance sensitive. It still zooms in really close in 3D mode to show you the way.
