Nod32?

I just got my first car GPS (Nuvi 265 WT) yesterday and upon first connecting it to my computer a message from Nod32 popped up. The message was E:\Autorun.inf and the threat being the INF/Autorun virus. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you resolve it?

Thanks

Is E: drive the Nuvi or a card in the Nuvi? If it is a card, there is a separate thread that addresses the issue of viruses showing up on some new cards and being caught by Nod32. The autorun feature allows the virus to run before you can reformat the card. Safest thing would be to reformat the card on a Mac which won't run the exe or com files that spread the virus.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Not the card

I have yet to put a card in the unit. It is simply the Nuvi itself, that's why it has me confused. I just hit "no action" on the Nod32 screen about five times and it goes away, but that's not the method I really want to use each time.

your nuvi might be infected. delete the file e:\autorun.inf (you might need to show hidden files in folder view to do it - most viruses hide the file).
chances are your computer is infected or you connected the nuvi to an infected machine at some point and the virus got on it.

Purchase

Where did you buy the nuvi? Local retail store, internet store, eBay, etc? Was it new in sealed box or used from an opened box?

Wait a Second...

With regards to your antivirus software, I have to comment that NOD32 is not the most accurate out there. It's known to have false positives, by that I mean it could throw a red flag on a file, even if the file is completely safe.

Get a second opinion. Scan your Nuvi files with a free online scanner, or try the Free AVG antivirus. If either of those complains about an infection, then you really should follow the steps mentioned by other users to get it reset or something.

Yes, I too am curious where you purchased this from. Did you load POI files from another location, besides this forum?

Futureshop.ca

I got the unit brand new, sealed, in box from futureshop.ca I did download some POIs from various sites - ones that had specific Canadian content.

I'll try the online AV scanners, it just may be a while - we're getting pounded with snow here today!

Thanks again for the help folks, much appreciated.

This is what is in that file, nothing to be concerned about

All that is happening is the antivirus software is seeing the autorun.inf file that is in the root directory of Garmin Nuvis.

This is what is in that file and it is nothing to be concerned about:

[autorun]
icon=Garmin\nuvi_drive.ico
action=Garmin nüvi
label=Garmin nüvi

As rjrsw posted, this is exactly what is in the autorun.inf file on my 660 and my AV program (ZoneAlarm Security Suite) does not alarm when I connect the GPS to my PC.
Open the autorun.inf file with Notepad and as long as it has just those 3 lines, you should be fine. The detection may be a false positive. But, I would use one of the online scanners as suggested, just to be sure.

You can get the free AVG at

You can get the free AVG at http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-223... I used it for years without a problem.

Seems okay

AVG reported no viruses, malware, etc.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

don't put complete trust in AVG

AVG can be pretty slow to recognize viruses. I've seen files that I thought has a virus in them, scanned then with AVG, was told "nothing found" but put them aside for further inspection. Six months or more later AVG suddenly finds a virus in the file when I do a full disk scan.

My suggestion is that if you have other reasons to suspect a virus, don't put complete trust in AVG.
