Garmin StreetPilot i3

Hello,
Please be gentle with me? I am a new user in the life of gps. I am learning and growing. I am having a hard time learning how POI files work, I mean I realize the intention. I just need some support. When I load these POI files to my device, would I need additional space on my sd card? Also are there any speed limit alerts and school zones for my area? I am lost.

HELP ME

Hello Thurman,
One step at a time. The 1st thing you should do is become familiar with your i3. Enter an address to a familiar place and let it guide you there. Try that a few times and you'll then be confident that it really works. I also intentionally took wrong turns to see if it would get me there. Once you feel comfortable and you want to add poi's start reading here there are many that understand and will be happy to help you. Before you know it you'll be making poi files yourself.

Hi Ray,

Thank You for the taking the time to reply back to me. I feel better already. I downloaded a few POI and I only have one question. You know that we have the i3 and exactly how many POI can I put on it, with that limited size on the sd. Also I downloaded one POI that I can live without. How can I unLOAD it.

I hope I am not bugging the mess out of you. One more question. I am a Manager at Wal-Mart so I found a POI for Wal-Mart Stores. It loaded alright but it didn't show the address or phone number. Did I do something wrong or is that just how somebody entered the info in the cvs file.

You did nothing wrong

All the file has in it is the Latitude & Longitude, and "Walmart" on each line - no addresses or phone numbers.

It all depends on who is

It all depends on who is creating the POI files, some users go the extra mile and put in all the info in the 4th column (address, zip code and phone number) other's just put in the basic info required for a POI file (long, lat, and description)

removing poi

Thurman your questions are welcome here. To remove a poi from your i3 do this:
1)go to the folder on your computer that contains the file.
2)either delete the file or move it to another folder.
3)hook up your i3 to your computer and load poi's and voila it will install the files again except the one you removed.
4)turn on your i3 and verify the file is gone..

As for free space on your i3 the poi files require very little space and you can install a larger microSD card such I did. I bought a 1 gig MicroSD online for $10.00 after rebate and installed continental USA and still had 100 megs free for poi's. Basically making your i3 into an i5 for much less money plus the i3 comes with the mapping DVD that allows it to be installed onto up to 2 different Garmin gps's. I plan on getting a new Garmin handheld and installing the mapping for free.
This saves lots of $$ smile

I will go out this weekend

I will go out this weekend and pick up one of those microSD cards. I will buy a 1GB. I don't know if I will ever travel all around and across the US, but it is nice to know it is there if and when I need it.

Your i3 should sort the list

Your i3 should sort the list based on the closest one to your location. Make sure if you have just turned it on that it acquires sats first. Then go to your custom points and it will list them by distance from your current location.

here is a good deal on a 1 gig microSD with adapter

Hi, was following this

Hi, was following this discussion about the i3 and storage cards. I have an i5 and was wanting to know if adding a 1gb card will add to the PIO storage capability of the unit. I was told by another person that a card used in the i5 is only good for loading additional maps, not PIOs. I was also told the internal memory storage capacity (in the unit itself) for additional data is 2mb. Is all this correct? Thanks for any info on this.

i3 GPS

I have Garmin i3 GPS with a 2GB mem card and it take all the maps on the CD plus 88% POI info
it like having a telephone Dir with NAV DIR
plus i downloaded the up-grade from 2.70 to 330
plus i do all the up-grading on the computer and then copy over to the SD in my computer onto my GPS i3 everything is done on the computer
