Nuvi 760 v. Tom Tom GO 930

Well, this past weekend, I had a chance to try out the Nuvi 760 and the Tom Tom GO 930. For ordinary driving, the 760's map screen only showed the car's speed and the direction of travel (i.e. a compass). When driving to a destination, the 760's map screen showed the time of arrival and the distance to the next turn. The next turn street and direction are shown at the very top. Bare bone screen information. Price: $299.99 Canadian.

The GO 930's map screen showed the current street name, the distance to the next turn and the name of the street to turn onto, the car's speed, the maximum speed of the current street, a compass, the distance remaining to our destination, the time remaining to our destination and the present time. GO 930 is the flagship of Tom Tom. Price: $349.99.

The map screen comparison made the Nuvi 760 look naked. The FM transmitter on the 930 outperformed the 760. The 930 also has the extra document reader (.htm and .txt formats).

I was seriously thinking of buying 930 but since I live in Canada, Advanced Lane Guidance does not work in Canada. I have heard that TOMTOM maps are not very good for Canada. I have 760 for more than a month. I am pretty happy with it. Before 760, I had c330. TOMTOM gives you lots of options to customize it. I think both devices are pretty good.

Does that mean that my

Does that mean that my nuvi 765T's Lane Assist will not work in Canada or for that matter, my europe map?

Nuvi 760

The screen should have also shown the next street name / next exit number in the top bar and names on the side streets (at least it does in track up mode).

Either unit will get you from A to B. It is what you like in a ui or the menus that make the sale. I am not sure when the 930 came out, but the garmin xx5t models may have been a better comparison of generations.

the reasons people go with garmin are basically :
Garmin's software is superior in terms of user interface and responsiveness.
People have a huge stack of existing maps and map data invested in garmin formats
People have lifetime traffic and dont want to switch units
Garmin has superior support with kansas natives answering the phone.
Garmin has been fully hacked and cracked with no way for garmin to pull the plug on existing GPSrs.

How aboutg the TomTom 930 FM

How aboutg the TomTom 930 FM Transmitter. Any other commenst on that ?

I find it to weak and therefore useless. Which is a big disappointment for me.

Is there anything one can do about this ?

88.1 MHz

I set the FM frequency to 88.1 MHz and the sound coming out of my radio speakers is quite loud enough when the GO 930 computer voice Susan is announcing instructions and the GO 930 is playing MP3s, however, the person at the other end of phone calls said I was coming in faint although I can hear him/her pretty loud at my end.

How about static ? I have a

How about static ? I have a lot of interference of othe traffic and radio stations.

This reduces somewhat when I put my hand on the TomTom
