speedtrap.org data

I wrote a spider to collect the lat/lon data ... and
am finding some problems with their data. Example:
They've got a CA lat/lon listed in the FL section!?!?

Does anyone know an easy/free way to batch-sort
~20,000 lat/lon pairs by state?

We don't have permission to use the data from that site.

You can use it for your personal use but it can't be posted here.

I did NOT post it here. I'm simply asking a
question.

Hey there,

What she actually said was "You can use it for your personal use but it can't be posted here.", which is not the same thing. She was just being polite and letting you know the site's rules smile

PS: This is a very friendly board, so please take our posts in that light.

To that effect, there are a few tools out there that you might be able to find by searching the board, one that is called POI verifier or something like that.

Hope that helps you out.

Spidering and scraping is generally FROWNED upon by website owners. In most cases, it's against the terms of use.

Not my experience so far. Six (count'm 6) emails
overnite griping about me posting a question. Four
of those whine that I'm not a contributor here. That
too is incorrect. In the past few days I have
contributed 20+ POIs to existing projects and
started one new project.

So far, only one reply is on-topic.

Correct. Why do you believe that I have not read
the terms of usage?

Maybe it's in the interpretation

In reviewing your posts in various messages, I don't see anyone griping at or about you, or complaining about you not contributing. The individual POI contributions you have made are appreciated and will enhance the whole.

Miss POI was making a statement about the rules of the site (and since it's "her" site, we all agree to play by her rules). MMama was making a general observation about the TOU of most sites. Neither of those were condemnations of you or your actions, yet you've snapped back as if they were personal attacks.

There are many different personalities on this site - from sugary sweet and verbose to direct and abrupt, but they're all very helpful - if you let them help. You've been a member here for 3 days - take some time to enjoy the benefits of the whole community. I think you'll like us eventually.

Welcome!

My apologies

Let me explain myself a bit more, I have had other sites like mine come to me and accuse me of farming data from their sites because they see that they have been mentioned in threads.
So when I see another site mentioned I just put up a friendly reminder so that those sites know that I am protecting their data and showing respect to the hard work that they are doing.

I don't use data from other sites like mine because I like to do the research myself and be accountable for the work that I represent.

My intention was not to put you on the defensive. I have been very excited about all that you are contributing to the site, you have really been rocking the Mom and Pop files.

It looks like this may be another case of people coming to Miss POI's defense when it is not needed.

I apologize for the emails that you received, I hope that whoever sent them will think twice about behaving that way again.
We are a great community of people and I know that you are going to be a star player in this group.

Welcome aboard and thanks for all that you have been doing around here, it really is fantastic.

Miss POI

Smooth!

*Emails*; not messages.

I've been admonished via email for posting
"illegal" info. I posted a question; *nothing*
more. The info is not "illegal."

I've been admonished for not using the search
feature. I did use the search feature ... that's
why I did not post the POIs.

I've been admonished for being a "hit & run taker",
not a contributor. Wrong; again.

I've been admonished for enabling "speeders" and
"drunk drivers" to avoid tickets ... while the
board itself SELLS camera POIs.

Quite a welcoming committee ...

In reviewing your posts in

There are always a few that want to take on what someone post but that is everywhere. Here everyone tries to help each other. I have had a number of e-mails between different people and always got the help and answer I needed. Some times in post people get a little on the cranky side. If you feel that strong I would send Miss POI a copy of the emails and let her decide if she wants to comtact those people of line and talk to them. Other wise I would just let it roll of your back like water on a ducks back and keep helping this site to make it better. There is a large amount of knowledge out there that will come in handy some day. Glad to have you with us. grin

I have found that Google Maps can be used to
to reverse geocode a lat-lon pair to a complete
street address. Simply substitute the target
lat-lon into the URL:

http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?output=xml&oe=utf-8&ll=42.10...

Since I got caught in a speed trap just this past weekend, a seed trap POI file is something I would like. I plan on building a personal speed trap file of this one and a few others I personally know about in my area or areas I travel in.

That being said, a speed trap POI database could be built here just like the red light camera and speed camera files. I would suggest maintaining speed trap files by state to make maintenance easier, with different user designated to maintain certain state files. one rule would be no data could be generated from any other web site, only from personal observation. also, strict definitions of what a speed trap is is needed to restrict the size of any database.

My definition of a speed trap is a stretch of highway where the speed limit is reduced below normal for the type of road and is highly monitored. A speed trap is not just a location where law enforcement hide to catch speeders on roads marked with a normal speed limit.

I'll make a personal file from the areas I travel.

Edited to add: Ok, I see where some have already been started. Cool!

I did start one....

Drak, I did start one based on the files I got from this site and updated it as people updated theirs. I also added about 5 locations based on my commute to work. Not sure if you want this or if you already started yours. Let me know, I can send you my 5 locations to add to yours.
