Uploading POIs

I have uploaded a couple POIs in in the last day or so. I used GPX format, should I also upload them in CSV??

You can use POIloader with both gpx and csv files. Each poi list will appear in your custom poi pages.

If you transferred the gpx file to the garmin\gpx folder, they will appear in your favorites pages.

For me...

I like to supply CSV files since I think they are easiest applied to all GPS manufacturers and are smaller in size. That said, I make known that a gpx file is available since that is my source. I wish it were easy to upload both.

Let me clarify

I'm sorry, I should have said what I uploaded them to. I uploaded them to this web site.

If I understand your post, you uploaded the files to the POI-Factory site. People here sometimes use the term "upload" or "download" when they really mean "load" with POI Loader. I would much prefer to have files in GPX format -- if somebody wants it in csv format, they can convert easily enough. Thanks for your work.

You are correct.

They haven't been verified yet, so they aren't up for download. Two of the files are for fire protection suppliers, and the other is for all the Big Ten Tire locations in Georgia.

I used the GeePeeX program, so I can export in CSV, if anyone would want them. I realize that hardly anyone will want the Fire Protection Supply Houses, but as I get a little faster at this, I will do more sites.

Problem with .GPX

is that not all of us can change them to .csv files to manipulate. I use a Mac and know of no program to convert .gpx to .csv and .gpx files are to complicated to go through and find locations. Excel files are much easier. I wish everyone would give us .csv files. I simply ignore the.gpx files.

Everyone to their own

I realize there are advantages to gpx POIs, like dialing; but if that isn't needed, I prefer csv POIs. They're easier to author, easier to modify for my own use, easier to convert to some other formats, faster loading, require less computer and GPS space, etc. Sometimes gpx can contain more data; but for the most part, all data in most gpx POIs (except dialing) can be included in fields 3 and 4 of a csv file.

It used to be nice to say "I can program html"; but not anymore as everyone can do it with available programs. The same holds true for gpx.

This has been brought up before ... I'd like to see the POIs available in poi.gpi format. They can just be copied to the GPS, include "standard" (here we go again) alerts and mp3, won't require POI Loader, can be renamed so they won't over-write previously loaded POIs, and can be loaded with a MAC. I realize this won't be compatible with all GPS units; but neither are Garmin's csv and gpx POIs.

That would work great if everybody could play mp3 files, and everybody wanted custom alerts (or any alert for that matter), and mp3 alerts didn't screw up playing mp3 music/books on some units. But sadly, that is not the case.

CSV

Once my other files are verified by the admins, I will also iclude the csv version with my uploads. I am working on another one, but it will take me a while since it has several hundred entries.

Like the rest of that paragraph said, "I realize this won't be compatible with all GPS units; but neither are Garmin's csv and gpx POIs."
