Custom POI list order

I have a nuvi 205 and I used the POILoader to add custom POIs to the GPS, I noticed they were not in alphabetical order, it appears you have to add them in alphabetical order for them to display that way. That's not a problem until you have to update one and now it appears out of order, thus you have to upload each poi again.

I'm talking about the way it gets listed under extra, custom POI's. I would like to have that in alphabetical order everytime.

Go on your computer and

Go on your computer and click on your main folder. When all of your subfolders come up go to top of page and click on view.Come down to arrange icons and make sure mark on Name and check mark on Auto Arrange. That should fix it.You will then need to put them back into the gps.

Folder Structure

On the PC, I organize my POI files in one level deep folders. (Limit is one level.) See below. Then, I point Garmin’s POI Loader to the folder POI which contains those subfolders (Attractions to Travel). Each of those subfolders (Ex. Car) contains POI files such as AutoZone, Napa, etc.

POI
...Attractions
...Car
...Food
...Health Care
...Lodging
...Shopping
...Travel

Scar,
Categories display in alphabetical order. So, subfolders and then filenames under that should display as you wish. Within a given file, they display in order of the distance from your current location. If you want an order other than would normally result from the names on the folders, you can start the names with numbers -- 01 to 99.

If I understand right. You want Attractions,Car,Food,Health Care,Lodging,Shopping and Travel to show in that order when you touch custom pois right?I am using internet explorer and to maintain that order you have to go to view at top of page and make sure the settings are liked I outlined above. They will stay in that order after you update them . Once you touch the custom poifile the locations will show based on the closest to you.

Charlie,
He's concerned with how they display on the GPS; that has nothing to do with how you choose to view them on the computer with Windows Explorer.

I just tried it on my unit and put them out of order to see what would happen. They did come back in order.I know a user had this same problem in the past and it had something to do with the order he downloaded them in.Must be thinking of something else.

I recall people in the past posting that on some units they appeared to show up in the order that they were loaded.

I believe that it was determined that they were being shown in the order of the FAT table.

I also believe that this can be corrected/avoided by making sure that each file is in a folder and that none are in the Main POI folder (on the computer) without being in a subfolder.

should sort of be in alphabetical order

You don'y have to add them in Alphabetical order. the should be in a form of alphabetical order, could you give us an exact example of what is not in order?

I say "a form of alphabetical order:" and ask for an exact example, because there is one thing that will throw you and isn't quite alphabetical order, all upper case letters will sort before all lower case letters. So if you have Airports, Zoos and hhgreg, they will indeed sort in that order, not the order that you might expect. The only fix taht I can offer it to capitlize all POi sets and all folders.

Thanks MM.After seeing your

Thanks MM.After seeing your post it is all coming back now.It was about putting all csv files in one main folder.

Here is what I've got on my

Here is what I've got on my end, I have a folder called POI, inside that folder is other folders lets say Bars, Food, Ice Cream, Stores, Tallahassee area attractions, Tallahassee Fire Stations. they are list in alphabetical order on the computer.

Using POILoader I upload them to the GPS and they are in alphabetical order on the GPS. I upload each POI one at a time and rename the POI file to match what I just uploaded. So now the GPS has all my POIs and they are in alphabetical order because I uploaded them that way.

Now I decide to upload something new, so I create a folder on my computer called Airports, using POILoader, I upload it to the GPS and rename the POI file on GPS to airports. Restart the GPS and go to custom POIs and airports is at the end of the list instead of the beginning. Even if I add a new csv file to stores and re-upload it, it now appears at the end of the list instead of in order.

The only way to get it in alphabetical order is to upload all the POIs again in aplhabetical order.

Uploading all them POIs is a big pain, that is way I take the time to rename the poi file on the GPS everytime, so I don't have to upload everything each time I make an update.

Under Custom POIs on GPS looks like this:
All Categories
Bars
Food
Ice Cream
Tallahassee area attractions
Tallahassee Fire Stations
Airports
Stores

I hope that explained it better.

We didn't realize you had multiple gpi files. I guess that is an advantage for having a single gpi file. Now, the comments about location within the FAT make sense. I didn't realize that the alphabetization comes from POI Loader and not the gps itself. I don't see how you will be able to get around this.

If you decide to stick with the multiple gpi files, you might want to check out using subfolders on the gps to hold multiple POI.gpi files so that you don't have to rename them after loading. If interested, see ScrugnesGundogs explanation at:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/17095 .

Thanks for taking the time to detail the problem.

It won't make any difference what order the entries are in on your computer. The Nuvi will arrange them according to the distance to the POI with the closest POI listed first.

You can test this by driving toward a more distant POI until it is the closest and then checking the displayed order on your Nuvi.

You are indeed correct. I had seen the upper case / lower case problem when the hhgreg chain seemed to vanish from my Stores sub-folder. But now I also see that if you use the renaming the poi file trick to avoid reloading everything at once (as both you and I do) or to load some POIs in automatic mode and others in manual mode, this problem will be apparent.
