what is the approx amount of songs the mp3 player can hold ? what do you guys think about the traffic info on this unit would most of you pay to keep it or not . thanks glenn
mp3
The amount of songs depends on how much stuff you have deleted off of the unit, as well as how large of capacity your SD card is. Both can be used for MP3s. A 2 GB card will give you about a thousand songs (how many do you need?)
Here's the math
Rule of thumb for mp3 files is one megabyte per minute of recorded time. That's sampling at 128 bits. Higher than that uses a bit (no pun intended) more space.
You can either add up the length of all your songs or you can look in your directory and add up file sizes to determine how many your memory card will hold. If you have a 1 gig card (1 gig = 1024 meg) there's (theoretically) space for 1024 minutes of music. It's best to round that off to 1000 minutes because of memory card issues we don't need to fuss with here.
Don't want to do the math? Just highlight a ton of files and try to move them to your memory card. The file transfer will stop when the card is full

i am using just the memory
i am using just the memory that came with the unit i did not purchase a sd card . without the purchase of extra memory what do you think it can hold . thanks glenn
.
Probably not more than a handful.
527 minutes

According to Garmin the 760 has 527 megs available for storage of photos, music, poi's etc. Assuming you haven't loaded anything else and you've removed all the 'sample' photos, sounds and other items that came with your unit you can, theoretically, load 527 minutes worth of music. At 4 minutes per song that's (carry the 1 divide by...) uh, a whopping 131 songs.
I'd suggest you spring for a decent size memory chip. Amazon has an 8 gig Sandisk chip right now for about 12 dollars. A lot of brick and mortars were selling memory last weekend ultra cheap. I recall Staples had 4 gig chips for about ten bucks, BestBuy about the same. Spring for the memory. Carrying a thousand songs (4 gig) has to be a lot more entertaining than 100.

If you're in to immediate
If you're in to immediate satisfaction (you don't like waiting for shipping), I saw Staples has an 8G card for $25 on sale (cheapest I've found not online) and they also have a pack of 3 2G cards for $25 normal price. I'd assume the sale price ends today.
If you want the Clearance bins, you can pick up 1G cards (and even 512M cards) for under $5.
