Garmin firmware version 4.60 for 7X0 series released

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3811

Change History
Changes made from version 4.20 to 4.60:

* Correction to optimal route reordering.
* Added support for two traffic providers.
* Corrected issue with speed limits on certain roads.

I have loaded it into my 760 without problem and tested the route optimization with a 14 waypoint route that was 165 miles before optimization and 91.8 miles after. All 14 points were still there with none added or subtracted and both the original starting and ending points were still the same after optimization. Looks like they have solved the only remaining problem I was having with my 760.

I received this response from Garmin about the added support for two traffic providers:

"The support for two traffic providers means that in addition to the Clear Chanel traffic that comes with the 760 you can now purchase a Navteq traffic receiver to work with this device. It will not change anything on the unit. Just adding compatibility with new accessories. Thanks have a great day and a Happy New Year!

Thank you for contacting Garmin International:"

Has anyone seen receivers available with a chocie of the two different traffic options? If you have any information on them please post.

Quite the opposite.

Quite the opposite.

What about a 765T?

Any idea where the support page is for a Nuvi 765T? Web updater updated it when I first got it but I cannot find the support page on the Garmin web site.

Tampa, could you share with us

How do you determine if you have the firmware update 4.60? I connect to WebUpdater and it tells me that I have the most recent software. When I scroll down for other updates I do not see 4.60.

This is bad advice and will take you intoo a screen that is not intended for the average user and that you might do a lot of harm with. The proper way to get the software version for you Garmin is

Please correct me, someone, if I'm wrong, but I think the entire nuvi 7xx (not the 7x5) series uses the same firmware, so 4.6 should be for you, too. A quick check with WebUpdater should let you know.

Check here.........

do NOT upgrade! enable the track log and then upgrade your unit. you are VERY LUCKY to get a ver 3 which can enable the hidden track log and update to 4.60.

I do not understand what this post was warning about? The trip log still is there with 4.60 and can be turned off and on under Tools>Settings>Map>TripLog menu.

Confused w/ Nuvi 2xx?

I think zurk may have this confused with the Nuvi 2xx series. Garmin added a hidden track log feature in the 2xx series, which could be enabled. In a later update, Garmin removed the feature, if you had not enabled it before upgrading the firmware. See this thread and web page:

The Hidden Screen (another one)

RJ,

I've just spent a bunch of time looking for the post that Zurk is referring to without success so will have to rely on memory.

Apparently with the earlier V2.x firmware there was a screen that allowed the user to manipulate the track log data turning the logging on/off (rather than just toggling the visual display) etc. When the owner upgrades the firmware that screen is lost UNLESS it was being displayed before connecting the GPS to a computer for firmware upgrade. If the screen was up then it wasn't deleted. At least that's how I recall it. The post is on the forum....somewhere...along with a picture of the screen.

Cheers wink

The 780 is simply the 760 with MSN so it should take the 4.6

builtin log is crap.

the real track log is far superior. it records raw GPS data instead of snap to road data. it can playback / record / save multiple files.
1. back up nuvi 760
2. install nuvi760_230.exe
3. activate the track recording feature (and never turn it off from the map screen) by holding down the speedometer for about 10 sec. Press next to go to the Travel log screen. Click start recording.
4. update again to 4.60.

once you upgrade to 4.xx up you cannot downgrade at all. on some versions of 4.xx downgrading does work but kills bluetooth permanently. do not try this if you have a ver 4.xx firmware installed.

You're thinking of another model. Track Log is one of the standard - and advertised - features of the 760.

bml - go for the upgrade. There were LOTS of things fixed between your version and this one.

You have to be thinking of a different model. There never was an issue with Track Log on the 760. It has always been there and has never had any issues with any of the updates.

I got the 760 for Fathers Day in June. It came with 2.x something firmware, I believe. I have applied every firmware that came along, including the latest 4.60. I have never had a screen like the one that you show. And again, it was - and is - an advertised feature of the 760 to have a track log. It is mentioned on page 39 of the 700 Series manual. It has had a track log feature since I got it and has never lost it during any of the upgrades.

Personally, I would love the option to turn off the track log altogether. So I actually wish that you were correct. As it builds the track log, the unit boots slower and slower. Deleting the track log returns it to a fast boot again. For a while.

Alright, now I'm curious

Just what, exactly, are you ranting about? If you could be a bit more descriptive, it would be immensely helpful.

What good does it do to turn on the track log before updating?
Why is it so important to do this? Does this give a better download of the tracklog feature?

All the issues that I'm aware of that started with 3.00, 3.10. 4.00, 4.10 and 4.20 have been fixed on my 760 with the 4.60 update. No random shutdowns or lockups no late navigation prompt delays and no route optimization problems with larger waypoint routes.

nuvi 750 hidden screens

Interesting. As I feared, I'm unable to activate this log feature on my 750 (firwmare 4.6) but have discovered several new hidden screens. If interested for other 750 users or maybe all 7x0 users, here's how I got there and what I see:

To get to these hidden screens: with a map showing, touch the lower left corner (the arrival time or speed indicator). As expected, this takes you to your "dashboard" screen. Now touch and hold for about 6+ seconds the big upper center speedometer.

Results:

The first screen seen is a Shutdowns screen, and by pressing Next as needed, you arrive at the following added screens:

Stacks
TSK Mem. Statistics
Nonvol Info
Message Banners
Bluetooth Status
External Devices
MSN Direct Status
MSN Direct Messages
GTM Status
GTM Info
(Then it recycles through all the above until you touch Quit)

Interestingly (and fearfully) some of these screens allow for a Dump, Reset, Update PR, Clear, Test, and Norm, although it'll take a braver person than me to try some of these options.

Ah, I see there has been a discussion of these pages here:

These articles are more than a year old. And there is a post indicating that it did not exist on the 750/760. If it had, this "feature" would have disappeared long, long ago. It was not present with 2.90 when mine was purchased.

Faster boot time is good to hear

I'd become annoyed after updating to 4.2 to find that my 760 booted more slowly. Garmin support recommended reloading the update and doing a full reset. That helped a little, but is still wasn't as fast as pre-4.2. I'll update tonight and see if 4.6 is better.

4.6 seems to be faster to get Satellites lock

After I upgraded to 4.6, it seems to be much faster in getting satellites lock, furthermore, before when turning the unit indoors it would get signals about 50% of the time, now it seems to get signals 80% of the time and faster, it seems to be a very positive upgrade so far.

Mine seems to boot up faster as well. Guess we will see what else happens. It has reduced the lag time when in route, so that is another positive.

Still love my Garmin

4.60 - So far so good

All the good things folks have already noted in above posts, and no issues noted. It took a long time for Garmin to make it right, but it appears they did. Hope all who have 'been down this road before' have successful updates....

Boot Up

Thanks for the firmware update info. I've updated my 750 and have had good luck with it so far with the exception of several delays on the Loading Maps screen that were over 2 minutes. I've since cleared the Trip Log and will continue to test.

nuvi 760 firmware 4.60 update and SMS text messaging

I upgraded my nuvi 760 to firmware 4.6 and did have one completely unanticipated result... the SMS text messaging feature when bluetooth-connected to my RAZR V3xx phone seems to have vanished completely.

I'm not sure how much this upsets me since it didn't work very well for incoming text messages anyways, seemingly ignoring about 75% of them, and I am not looking to endanger people by writing outgoing texts while driving. Anyways, the update seems to have removed the text message button from the phone menu.

Anyone else have similar results with other phones? Did the nuvi support SMS messaging through any other phones?

I have done it, everything is ok.
