Logging added to nuvi 2xx

From GPS Passion

In an unexpected move, Garmin have quietly added a logging mode, one of the star features of the new high-end nüvi 7xx series, to the entry-level nüvi 2xx family of AIOs with firmware v3.40. It is hidden for now, but the interface seems to be ready for general release and you can head out to this thread of the nüvi forums for the key sequence to activate it and download popej's tool to convert the result to the standard .gpx format.

I just tried going to the logging screen

I just tried going to the logging screen on my nuvi 200 and it does work. The logging control allows me to start recording or start playback.

Here is a link to instructions and screen shots.

My nuvi 200 now has a Log folder

My nuvi 200 now has a Log folder and when I connect with MapSource I can now check the boxes to download Maps, Routes, and Tracks, which I couldn't do before. Though, I haven't figured out how to download the log yet.

New nuvi 2xx Utility

MapSource won't download the tracks from my nuvi 200 directly, but I found a new utility (created just for this new nuvi 200 hidden feature) to convert the .bin log file to a .gpx that I can then load into MapSource. Works perfectly. The utility is aptly named Nutrak.exe.

True, but I didn't mention Nutrak by name.

True, but I didn't mention Nutrak by name. More info for people.

Oddly, I thought they would put a QWERTY keyboard in the upgrade before they implemented the track logger.

Has anyone had any luck playing back track logs

Has anyone had any luck playing back track logs on nuvi 2xx? Mine shuts down (data abort) every time I try to play them on the nuvi.

I have seen this bug mentioned on GPSPassion, but haven't determined what the cause it yet. I guess I will just wait for the feature to be fully implemented.

If I remember correctly, you

If I remember correctly, you have to record a couple of them before it will let you play them back. I'm not sure why it happens, but after I made the first one, it kept shutting down when trying to access playback. After recording two more, it then let me play back all of them.

That's what I thought, so I recorded a second one.

That's what I thought, so I recorded a second one. I'll try recording a third and see what happens.

I've recorded a total of 4 logs.

Well,

I've recorded a total of 4 logs. When I had 3 the GPSr no longer turned off when I tried playback. Instead it just froze. Even after recording a 4th track the GPSr freezes when I press playback.

Track logging

O.K. for us newbies, sombody please explain what "track logging" means?

What about nuvi 3xx units?

--
I have seen the future and it is now!

As far as I know the 3xx

As far as I know the 3xx don't have it. I know that the 350 doesn't for sure!

It basicly records your position over time

It basicly records your position over time, sort of creating a bread crumb trail that you can map.

The Track log only works on

The Track log only works on version 3.4.

Another 350 hidden screen

CaptNorm wrote:

Easter Eggs

There's another hidden diagnostics screen on the Nuvi 350. Press and hold the analog speedometer and several screens of diagnostic data will pop up. Mine shows an unexpected software shut down on Dec 21, plus a bunch of other stuff that might be useful to a programmer. Oh, this is with firmware 5.20 if that might make a difference.

I just went to this forum and it is saying that v3.5 REMOVES the "secret" feature but allows for faster map display. Why would Garmin put it in then take it out? (If that is in fact what has happened.)

Confused...

Hi sorry, but a newbie question. I have a 250W and i just updated it to v2.9. The GPS sw version shows 3.00s.

Which of these are we talking about upgrading to 3.4?

.

When people are referring to the unit firmware version, this is what shows up on the unit as the "Software Version". This is different for each specific model.

The GPS SW Version is the GPS chip software version. The most current version is 3.00 for all/most models.

Thanks MM

That clears it up - thanks!

My guess is that Garmin was testing out this feature

My guess is that Garmin was testing out this feature, which is now on the 7xx series, and deleted it when they found that people discovered the hidden code. It might show back up when they work out the bugs. I would much rather have them restore the map scale that was removed, even if it was removed to speed up the map refresh.

Did I find it hidden again?

So after I entered the speedo and started scrolling thru all the program data got to "message Banners" page, use the arrow keys up and down. They give you messages like "log Recording has resumed" and "Playback complete end of log". Don't know wht these do but will play sommore.

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Eggs

Guess I've lurked long enough.. Received a Nuvi 260, for Christmas.. thanks Santa. It's still used as a toy. Though am learning a thing or two from this site so may end-up using it for it's intended purposes..

Here's two more Easter eggs that I’ve stumbled across:

1) Hold the On/Off/Lock switch to the ON position for about 30 seconds.

2) Press and hold the Battery icon for a few seconds.

Any more..??

Two questions:

!) Can a GPSr catch a virus.. malware.. tracking cookie..??

2) When a GPSr is hooked to the computer can the location be pin-pointed..??

Thanks for your time,

Tubby Grey
