Nuvi Trip Planning Capability

I'm a new Nuvi 255W owner and the first thing I wanted to do was plan a trip from Texas to Florida. While the routing algorithm seemed to work quickly and the route displayed on the map looked reasonable, I couldn't find any summary of the trip (total miles, estimated travel times, etc.) as would be found with a typical PC-based mapping program.

I've looked in the help files and even searched on 'trip planning' but haven't been able to find a way to do this.

Are my expectations too high?

.

Touch the Arrival Time on the lower left and at the top right it will show the miles to destination. Go back to the main screen and touch the Turn In on the bottom right, scroll to the bottom and see the estimated travel time.

That gives you all three of your requests.

On my 255W the arrival time is shown on the lower right (just the time of arrival and not the day of arrival or the number of days) and that area doesn't respond to touch. The lower left says "Speed" and touching that does bring up a Trip Log which shows the total distance (thank you). However, the trip log doesn't show the estimated total travel time anywhere - only the number of miles in each segment.

Perhaps it is necessary for the GPS to be underway (moving) before the other information shows up? If so that would be better than nothing but it doesn't make for ease of trip planning while at home.....

In my estimation the Nuvi is not a trip planning tool as much as it is a personal navigation device and aid. You have several options available for trip planning which far outstrip the capabilities of your Nuvi. Any of the web based map programs such as Google, Yahoo! or Mapquest provide a lot more in planning a trip than what you get on your PND. For best results, I would invest in a program such as Garmin's Mapsource or Streets & Trips or Street Atlas.

mapsource

Mapsource is the place to trip plan. Much easier than on the unit. Only some units store routes and allow a download of the planned route.

The nuvi's without route planning are really designed for getting in the car, punching up a destination and leaving.

When in the navigate mode, touch the bar at the top that shows the next turn. At the bottom of the next screen is a "map" button. Touch this and you will see a map of your trip. At the bottom of this screen is will show total miles to arrival and also total amount of time to arrival.
