What does your screen name mean?

We are members of the Airstream RV Owner's Association which is named after Wally Byam who invented the Airstream trailer back in 1933 or 1935.

Our membership number is #3371.

We have had Airstreams since 1990 and currently own a '93 Limited 34' trailer.

The city in east Tennessee in which I now call home.

I grew up in the mountains near Coudersport. While traveling through the area last summer I noticed multiple spellings. Alleghany, Allegheny, Allegany depending whether you were in PA or NY.

Micropterus is the genus for Black Bass, which include largemouth (Micropterus salmoides) and smallmouth (Micropterus dolomieui).

A varient of a Korean work that loosely translates to "urgent" or emergency. I am an ER nurse, although I am not Korean, I have an avid interest in the culture (and the food, mmmmmm). I also use the name in my e-mail because it really throws off the spammers.

Sometime, after much research and effort I may make a POI file of Korean restauraunts and markets in my area (NJ,DE, Philly, NY). MOst are Ma and Pop places so I will vist them myself. Mmmmmmm

Well there isn’t much to the name Bandaid. When I came across POI-Factory and decided to join the forum I thought it would be something temporary. I didn’t know at the time how cool this place was. I would be here day in and day out reading up on threads checking out POI’s, okay you get the point. I needed a username and came up with nothing. My little one (Christine) came up with bandaid and so my friends, I am Bandaid.

My daughter's name is Ebony. One of my greatest joys is being her ma.

"Shooter" is the nickname for a catapult officer on an aircraft carrier. The catapult officer leads and is responsible for the safety of the catapult crew and the aircraft during launches. I was a "Shooter" on USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65).

Almost everyone in Vietnam had a nickname and they were usually given to you by your fellow buddies. I was an MP and one night I was yelling at a soldier for something that he had done. One of my fellow MP’s looked at me and said, “You sound like a mad dog.” The nickname stuck. The 67 comes from the year that I arrived in Vietnam. Some of my buddies nicknames were, Rabbit from the Uncle Remus story and Brer Rabbit, (his last name was Barr, you kind of have to think about that one), Sluggo, because he never got in a hurry, Bullet, because he was quick in making decisions, Chief, because he was a Sioux Indian from the Rosebud Indian Reservation, and Tex, from the great state of Texas. Great friends. I miss those guys. Most of them are no longer with us. The picture next to my username is of the Wall in Washington DC with the names of over 58,000 individuals who gave their lives in defense of their country. Two of those names were classmates of mine.

I probably posted this already, but my bdhsfz6 ID was computer generated and based on name and social security number. It was my login for the old mainframe computer I used when I worked for the old Bell System. Every employee had one and the company all but had it tattooed on our butts.

Boyd is my real first name. It was also my mother's maiden name.

I got an AT&T 3B1 "Unix PC" back around 1990 when they discontinued them and "blew out" the remaining inventory at a big discount. It had a motorola 68010 CPU and 2MB of RAM with a huge 67MB hard drive, it also ran System 5. Pretty cool machine back in its day if you were into geeky Unix stuff, but nothing like a Mac or Windows machine.

Should be pretty obvious. I'm sober and a biker, spelled soberbyker because someone already had soberbiker when I first signed on to AOL many moons ago.

Although today my screen name should be changed to soberEXbyker because I no longer ride a motorcycle. Cancer and chemo saw to that, no longer have the strength to hold up the bike at a red light, and honestly my reflexes aren't as good either.

Technically, the 3B2 wasn't really a mainframe, it was a standalone unit about the size of a large microwave oven. The specs were pretty lame by today's standards. I think my smartphone has more "computing" power.

At the time N.J. Bell had one in each office with terminals on every desk. All the 3B2's were tied together with T1 lines and the system worked like a mainframe.

Outriders on a cattle drive were those riders who rode the outside of the herd and prevented the cattle from straying from the herd. The worked alone and preferred it that way. They did socialize at the evening meal around the campfire though. Since I have always been a friendly outsider, I adopted that name. We love RVing, and tend to go our own way, so rvOutride was an easy choice for a screen name. Think of it as a "gregarious loner" name.

Just read some more about it now, it was considered a "super microcomputer" and was based on the proprietary WE 32100 CPU chip from Bell Labs. That chip was (apparently) roughly comparable to the Motorola 68020 (which was used in the original Macintosh II) and the Intel 80386. The thing that set the 32100 chip apart was that it was designed for and optimized to run unix.

Looking at the product specs, it appears the 3B2 maxxed out with 16MB RAM and a 15gb hard disk. That is way, WAY below the capabilities of smart phones!

The very first iPhone (2007) had 128MB of RAM (8x more than the maximum 3B2 configuration). Most current phones have between 6 to 8Gb (8gb is 8192MB - about 500x as much as the 3B2!)

But the interesting thing is.... "under the hood" iPhones are actually unix computers (although based on BSD and not System V). Android phones are based on Linux, which is a reverse-engineered version of unix too. So, Bell Labs was certainly ahead of the curve "back in the day"!
