question about POI files

I have a nuvi 650..how come every time I downloaded a new POI file, the old one is gone? We can only have 1 POI file in our extras? Can someone tell me? Thanks!

The Old POI Eraser Trick

Each time you send new POI's to your Garmin all the previously uploaded ones are erased. Just use POI loader and resend all your POIs when you add a new one (keep them all in the same folder) and you'll be fine.

Garmin GPS III, GPS V, StreetPilot 2610, Mobile 10, Nuvi 660, Nuvi 760

it happens

When you load a poi , it will over write the one on the nuvi,
what you have to do is put all your poi you want into one folder, then using poi loader select that folder and you get all of them, check the faq and i think it is in there the whys howcomes on poi files or do a search for poi loading.

Only One POI File

Anytime you load a POI file to your Garmin, it overwrites the current file. You need to save the POI files that you want on your PC, then use POI Loader to load them from the PC to the Garmin. That way, you are not limited to one POI. Bear in mind that there is limited storage on the unit itself. If you want to have a lot of POIs, you need to get an SD card and store the POIs on it.

When you load with POI Loader

When you load with POI Loader it automatically erases all the existing POI's on your GPSr. In order to have both (or more) individual POI files in your Custom POI folder on your GPSr you must load all at the same time - they must be in the same folder (your POI folder) on your computer for POI Loader to load them !

Many great writeups on this site - particularly one by Phil Hornby - do a search !

POILoader creats a new POI

POILoader creats a new POI file everytime it uploads new poi's to the unit, so to get around uploading all the POI everytime, I upload a POI file and then go to the POI folder on the Unit and change the name of it. Then upload next and repeat the name changing to all the poi files I upload. My nuvi 205 reads all the different POI files located in the POI folder.

2 ways, you can use both

As people are already telling you, whem you download a POI file or set of POI files it overwrites the old POIs, if the old file was not renamed. If you rename the existing poi file (keeping the same extension) then you can download more POIs and not erase the old POIs.

I use both approaches together to help manage things. I have several store chains in a subfolder called stores, for example, I downloaded this set of several stores, then went into the poi folder on the Garmin ann renamed poi.gpi to stores.gpi . I did something similar for other groups of POIs, for example I have entertainment.gpi and redlight.gpi. Now if I want to update a poi file I delete the current file for just that group, download a new set of POIs (for the entire group but not for alll POIs in the gps) and rename the resulting file back to the proper group name so that it will not be overwritten the next time I download POIs.

For renaming, see ...

I am kinda new to this also

I am kinda new to this also and have a question. On my desk top I have 2 folders "speed trap", and "red light", each folder when opened contains a file. To update the poi can I just click and drag one folder to add to the other or does a folder have to be opened and then the file put in the other folder?

make a new folder

I suggest that you can make your life easier by creating a new folder called something like Garmin or GarminPOI (anywhere, but on the desktop is OK) and moving the 2 poi files that you now have into that folder. When you start POIloader, tell it to start at this new folder and it will load all of the POI files that are in that folder.

Also, to group your POI files, inside that folder you just created, you could create another folder, for example "stores". Then if you have several POI files that are lists of stores, you could put them all (up to 32) in that folder, and it will help you organize your POIs.

Thanks everyone for the

Thanks everyone for the input..now I know what to do..
Thanks again and have a great Christmas folks...
