Custom POI and alerts while using view map

Custom POI and alerts is there a waay to have them show up when just viewing the map. Sometime I'm out driving and not routing with the GPS but I have the map up. Is there a way to have the Custom POI and the proximity(sp) alerts working during this time.
I uploaded the walmart POI to my GPS and just took a cruise up the road past a wal-mart and it didn't show up while viewing the map but on my way back I routed back to Home and as I drove by walmart I show the icon and got the alert.
GPS: Nuvi 205 with lastest updates and maps.

This is because by default, the unit is looking 'along the road' you are travelling. Alerts on roads to the side aren't considered. If you've set a route, the concept of the road is extended to include the whole route.

Well reading through that
Well reading through that thread, it sounds like my alert should have went off in either mode. I was driving on the road the walmart is on in both map mode and route mode but the alert only went off in route mode.
I will attempt to try again. Maybe in the GPS they have it listed on the crossing street(wrong street).
Try
Try and make sure that you are zoomed in 300 feet or less. That will make the icon show up on the map, even if you don't get the alert. If the icon doesn't display - then there may be some other problems.
What I have found is sometimes the coordinates are on the edge of the range distance and you will get the alert going one way, but not the other. You would then need to move the coordinates closer to the road.
