nuvi 205 POI Displaying question

I have a nuvi 205 and I want to display POI icons on my map has I travel. Say I'm on a trip, I want all gas stations to show up on my map as a get closer to them, currently I have to go to menu and do a near search and I get a list but I don;t like doing that while I'm driving, so is there a way to have the POI icon display on the map as I get close to it.

thanks,
Shane

POI will show on the display if you are zoomed in enough. Under the conditions you have specified - being on a trip, you probably will not be able to get them to display. A POI has to be fairly close to your route of travel before it will display. That means those stations along the exits of major roads won't show as they are too far from your route.

As most cars don't need refueling except every 3-400 miles, why would you want to clutter the display with gas stations when you just refueled?

I just used gas stations as

I just used gas stations as an example. I just went on a trip this past weekend and missed a rest area because a truck was blocking the sign when I drove by it and when I got up on it I was in no position to get over to get off. It would have been nice to have the GPS show me a rest area icon, so I would have seen it coming, even though I missed the sign.

For rest areas you might want to set an alert, say 1 mile before each rest area. But for gas stations and the like you certainly would not.

As Frothingslosh states, set an alert. My rest area POI is set for a half mile which gives me plenty of time if I react shortly after receiving the alert. but then I'm not usually in the monster lane except to pass.

2 Miles

I have the rest area combined file from POI Factory loaded on my 660, with an alert distance of 2 miles set in POI Loader (to allow time to switch lanes) with one of the custom BMP icons (outhouse) and custom audio alert WAV file.

My wife doesn't want to miss rest stops!

Custom POIs

Custom POIs are the way to go.

They can be set to alert you when you approach them. There's a ton of cool ones on this site.

Please Use Alerts

Please use audible alerts instead of relying on icons. In order to see the icons you have to take your eyes off the road. Even if only for a few seconds, that could mean life or death.

I'm not an angel, I occasionally get distracted while driving. But I am really starting to worry about all of these posts asking how to view icons while driving.

Excellent Point!!!

I shouldn't be spending a lot of time looking at the GPS screen. I should be looking out the windshield at the road, perhaps only glancing at the GPS as I would when checking the rear view mirrors.

An interesting side-effect of setting an alert for POIs, is that it also alters the zoom level at which POI icons appears; making them appear more readily at 'lower' zoom levels...

Thanks for the advice, not

Thanks for the advice, not sure how to do any of that stuff on my GPS but I guess I will start researching it and testing when I have a chance.

Just to set peoples mind at ease, I wasn't planning on looking at the GPS at every second in the car or relying on icons, it would just be a nice feature and it I noticed the icon then great if not that's fine also.

***Update****
I think I figured this out, Downloaded POIloader and combined rest Areas, set miles alert just need to test it sometime.

Simulation

If your 205 has the simulation function, and I think it does, then you can test it without driving around. Anytime I load a new POI file with a BMP icon and WAV audio alert, I do a simulation to make sure I got the files named correctly and the alert speed or distance set the way I wanted it. Saves a lot of time and gas.

bummer

I wanted truck stop icons to show up like 50 miles down the road to better plan my drives. If I'm getting towards time to shut down, I would like to know how far it is to the next stop if I'm going to pass up the one I'm at.

Simulation

Thanks for the tip Gary

Another approach

refer to:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9227

I sometime use this method in conjunction with the VOR POI file (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4720) to see how far I am from the VOR aircraft navigation sites instead of keeping the Map display on while driving on uninteresting stretches of the interstate - such as across the Mojave desert
