Garmin 265WT

I don't know if this has been posted here already. I got it off a GPS newsgroup.

I've just read (http://tinyurl.com/5cmf9o) that one of the new "features" of the Nuvi 265WT is that advertisements pop up on the screen. Apparently Garmin considers it to be a fair trade for free traffic information, although as Consumer Reports says, "The ads do overlay some navigation information when they appear, but they are not overly obtrusive and many may consider them a reasonable compromise for free traffic information. (However, devices from Navigon provide free traffic without ads.) Nuvi 265T and 265WT owners will not be able to deactivate the ads, even if they do not have interest in the traffic information."

I suspect this is the wave of the future -- we're now bombarded with ads on billboards, buses, sides of buildings, radio, television, newspaper, magazines, on the telephone and fax, and by email. Now we get them on our GPS receivers. But there is no way I'm ever going to spend a nickel of my money on a unit that pops up advertising.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

I agree with you in principle...

...and thought I would find the ads on my 765T annoying.

But in practice, they are no problem at all...the text is very, very small, and I really don't know what Consumer Reports is referring to when they say it covers some navigation information...it is true that it appears on the surface of the map, but not in the center, or over your vehicle icon, or over any of the readouts such as ETA...and as I said the text is very small anyway...plus, it only appears if you are stopped for 10 seconds...does not appear while you are moving.

After using my 765T for a month, I am fine with it.

Just an alternate opinion for your consideration wink

I'll second that. The ads

I'll second that. The ads are no problem at all. What little (very little) annoyance they might cause some people, the free traffic is worth it.

I third that.

I rarely see the ads on my 265wt.
- They only appear if stopped.
- They are very small. Never have been in the way.
- I HATE ads, but this is really nothing at all.

I'm still waiting for the first ad to pop-up on my 265WT. I want to see what all the fuss is about.

ads seem to be pretty infrequent in my area

I am generally stopped for the necessary more than 10 seconds in the same several spots on my evening commute everyday, and I would think that I would see the ads every time, but I don't.

Maybe it is area specific, and perhaps we will see more and more as more advertisers sign on.

But regardless, I am over it already. grin
